Is Bromine (Br) Alone a RoHs Substance?

02/09/2010 7:21 PM

I know that PBB (Polybrominated biphenyls) and PBDE (Polybrominated diphenyl ether) are restricted substances according to the RoHs directive, but what about Bromine (Br) by itself?

Can anyone help me?

Doesn't appear so at first glance (which makes sense because it is a chemical element).

Bromide is not a RoHS-regulated substance

Also,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restriction_of_Hazardous_Substances_Directive

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromide

I would suggest consulting the internet regarding RoHs regulations particular to bromine (especially if you intend to use it in or to manufacturer a consumer or industrial product).

Correct. Bromine itself is not on the RoHS list. But it is on a lot of others and the regulations are fairly strict.

No. But, since it is so reactive, it will not stay in it's elemental form very long if released to the environment.

Dear Mikerho

Bromine gas like Chlorine and Iodine is toxic in nature. Reacting with water it will form a corrosive Acid HBr. Releasing it in atmosphere in a confined area is a serious problem. EPA site may give you its allowed concentration level permitted in air for a tolerable exposure time. Remember that concentration level and exposure time both go hand in gloves.

Bromine is a coloured gas so one should be able to see what one is being exposed to in high concentration levels. In lower densities it may not be visible to human eyes.

Elemental bromine is most unpleasant stuff. Try http://msds.chem.ox.ac.uk/BR/bromine.html for toxicology: "May be fatal if inhaled. Highly toxic by inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Causes severe burns. Lachrymator. Typical TLV 0.1 ppm." Peter Harris

A piece of electrical equipment containing either liquid or gaseous <...Bromine (Br) by itself...> would be a very rare thing.

To satisfy the forum's curiosity, the starting place is:

  • what sort of equipment is this, please?
  • can the manufacturer help over the telephone?
