Heat Exchangers and Baffles

02/26/2010 6:10 AM

How does the baffle cut & centre to centre between the baffles affects the heat exchanger design?

Also is it possible that the the pressure drop on the tube side can be reduced by changing the baffle cut or centre-to-centre dimension for the baffles without changing any other parameter from the cooler design?

Baffles are a compromise. The more baffles, the greater the turbulence within the exchanger and the better the heat transfer. The downside is that the pressure drop goes up too.

Baffle cut and spacing will affect the pressure drop and heat transfer on the shell side. For the tube side, you will need to look at the pass partitioning in the heads.

Baffle creat impingment, when steam hit the baffle it condenses releasing heat thus transfer heat.

In addition to response from others baffle spacing also changes the unsupported length of tube, natural frequency and ultimately vibration design

With regards
