Closed threads

03/04/2010 5:46 AM

I was just going through one of the posts (how to give a reply) where he mentioned about a previous thread.

When i checked the posters thread, surprisingly it was closed : homework

The question he asked was basic, but if one goes through it, it can not be a homework.

in the o-let branch connection, What is the size (with tolerance) of the opening in run pipe?

deose the "full penetration groove weld" mean "complete fusion of the run pipe opening at the root pass"?

(Pardon the spelling mistakes and no, I am not the OP of the thread, of course i am of this )

These seem to be a very fundamental doubts of some newbie in piping. And of course the second one is a straight lift from drawing.

Some guest has of course asked as reply "Is it a homework?"

But that does not preempt the admins.

I feel the admin should judge, and not act on every reports.

Also if possible there should be an appeal button on the closed threads so that if some one like me feels that it has been wrongly closed then the admins can have a re-look?

BTW: this is not one off case, I have seen this earlier too few times, and once got it corrected.

What you say guys?

I have now also located the closed "homework" thread. I mentioned closed homework because the reply button will disappear.

You are right in does not seem to be homework but it is difficult to say what it is.

He will anyhow reword his question and repost - I will at least watch out for the 'translated" question.

40 years ago -mmm that also makes you about 66 -Why don't join join CR4 as a permanent named member?

Generally homework and other inappropriate questions are picked up by members (and the admin.), the admin. notified, and the thread closed. In the rare times when the question is not homework it is simple enough for the original poster to re-word and re-post the question. Adding extra layers of bureaucracy is not really going to help (especially as many of the closed threads are by non-member 'guests' who do not have full access to the CR4 voting and hence appeal function).

Also note that sometimes 'closed - homework' and 'closed - get someone qualified to do your paid job' get lumped together (just an example).

That is really simple, I can always log in and appeal and come back.

However this thread in question unfortunately didn't fall into any category (and to be frank the first part - diameter of the hole to be drilled for the branch connection say welding a sockolet - it will be difficult for the guy to know where to fine, so we can always point hiim out), and then later he did become a member.

Only I am not sure why he never re-posted the query - got scared may be or may be asked his boss/ senior collegue and got the answer.

He could have done that in the beginning itself though.

The second one (get someone qualified to do your paid job' )unfortunately does not happen in CR4

Look at the 15KW inverter which by bargaining/haggling came down to 3KW but is still alive and kicking.

Only fortunate part is the posts where OP is asking for free standards/ books are getting quickly closed, though not quickly enough in a few cases, I have seen people posting lot of literature directly or uploading in some share and providing link and getting away with it.

In fact some time or other these links must be deleted before it harms the site.

Possibly, many threads end in people offering plenty of advice and/or asking for clarification on a rather broad poster's question but the original poster never responds or offers additional information or clarification. These threads can be annoying to participate in because you feel you are wasting your time offering advice that may be completely off topic or completely ignored because the original poster has gone.

He could have done that in the beginning itself though.

Again, so many threads can be (and are) answered by a quick internet search or a trip to the Wikipedia website.

In fact some time or other these links must be deleted before it harms the site.

Most are removed fairly quickly, but in the cases I have seen and/or participated in it has been clearly indicated by most posters replying that they must buy the standards, software, etc along with helpful links to online standards or software websites. Sometimes people don't realise that there are somethings you cannot get for free (where others are genuinely trying to get illegal copies of standards and software).
