1998 Mercedes C240 - Door Electrical Components Stop Working

03/15/2010 5:36 AM

I have a Mercedes C240 (2020261A...) V6 engine 1998.

the issue is that sometimes, the driver's power window and electrical mirror stop working, until i remove the corresponding fuse (nbr 8) and put it back, then everything is back to normal, its like resetting something. Other times, the front passenger door behaves the same, then i also have to remove/re-insert the corresponding fuse so it works.

I also noticed that when this is about to happen, the remote central lock (activated from the key) takes 3 to 4 seconds more to open the car, so i press the unlock, nothing happens, then after 3 to 4 seconds, the car opens.

did somebody encounter such behavior?

That is what you will have to accept from this cheaper cars.

It seems to be a bad connection at the back of your fuse box.

The wires from the body to your door may also be the culprit. (metal fatigue of wire from opening and closing)

You also cannot rule out some programming error.

Have the system inspected properly.

Thank you hendrik for your concern,

i first thought about the fuse connection at the back of my fuse box, but the fuse for the right door is in the fuse box next to the engine, and the fuse for the right door is in the fuse box in the trunk so i think this rules out that possibility. i highly suspect a program issue...

btw, i love to troubleshoot my car before sending it to the workshop.

I also have issues with modern day drag & drop programmers. they seem to ignore important results and error code from peripherals and hardware.

Is everything dry in the car? Under the mats are electrical splices in the ducts. They tend to corrode. Also check your "door closed" sensors and WD40 on time. Mercedes doesn't like hot and humid climate. Had several issues before but with the E series.

The contacts of the fuse holder are clean? Try some conductive grease on the pertinent connections.

I have had similar problems with my 1998 CLK 320, where the seat adjusters + side mirrors controls would act funny (i.e. push seat back-rest forward, it goes back! Shift mirror down, it goes up instead..!) and surprisingly it affects the remote key buttons with delayed response if any at all.

I found it pointless to repair it and pay for an arm & a leg at the dealer, since they told me that they would change the whole controls! they wouldn't even attempt to repair the existing parts!!

Try using the "stowed-away" spare remote key for a couple of times (locking & unlocking the car), it might've solved the error programming to my obliviance.

Cheers.
