Wi Fi Amplifier?

03/16/2010 11:11 PM

While Olga and I travel in our teardrop trailer, we use a small laptop with wi fi. Most of the time we are not close enough to a hot spot to get a good connection. I'm looking for a way to boost the reception of our laptop. Is there some type of wi fi amplifier that uses 12 volt power that we can use? Thanks, Ron

Far as I know, and I'm no expert, it is not an amplification problem.

It's more of a get the signal problem.

I am definitely not an expert.

Sometimes I just answer around here to be proven incompetent.

Anyway, is there a satellite that will feed the signal to your laptop?

Look on Ebay, and google wi fi booster. There are quite a few out there, many of my friends I deployed to Iraq with used them. We had scattered wi-fi towers all over the base, but not always where we needed them.

Be prepared to pay though, the best one I saw was a small aluminum heat sink that was powered by the USB port it plugged into, it had a small wire whip antenna but was designed to have a yagi or parabolic antenna attached. Even without the parabolic, it could reach over a mile (even with all the RF interference on base).

A good booster with a yagi, can reach several miles; one claimed 15 kilometers or so.

I kinda like this one, but haven't looked into it much. I recommend doing research on wi-fi and how the different types work so you make the right choice for you.

Also, if you have a whip antenna already, you can look up how to add a parabolic mirror onto it on youtube. It doesn't boost the signal, but narrows the direction and weeds through the RF interference so you can connect further.

You Mean like this

http://uk.wifi-link.com/set_usb_indoor_200.php

What you need is a directional Yagi that can both receive and transmit.

Unlike TV Ariel's which are designed only for receive

An omni directional is ok where there are multiple WiFi spots but for distance reception you cant beat a Yagi or directional hi gain Ariel.

also remember the problem is twofold ie you need to boost reception and boost out going signals.

wi fi was only designed for short distance transmissions.

You want to check local radio communication laws as they may vary from state to state.

But the short answer if it involves radio waves YES

I have even boosted reception with a passive array with no power usage at all.

From the previous posts, you will understand that a simple directionnal antenna will provide sufficient gain for your purpose, without resorting to sophisticated electronics and without spending much. Have seen coffee can designs (coffee can wifi antenna) on the web (including youtube) and, if you built it yourself, would probably fit nicely with the teardrop trailer concept.

Please let us know the results :-)

One option that I've been looking into casually is a 3G modem. My iPod Touch is little more than a pocket game machine when I'm away from a hotspot - not that there's anything wrong with that. Theoretically, a 3G modem should get you wifi whenever you have cell phone reception... with your carrier, I presume.

Hi Anon,

Its still rainy season here. No dust yet.... I've got several ideas from this forum that I'm going to try sometime in the middle of the summer. Thanks for asking, Ron
