Plug Valve Mechanism

04/07/2010 7:31 AM

We have a storage tank which stores sulphuric acid in this tank, the drain is in the bottom. What I want to know from you is there any such type of plug valve which is manually operated using the lever or handle to lift the arrangement so as to drain the acid and fast closing of the plug spindle so that the acid should not pass out . It is a concentric gas for safety precautions it should be immediately shut off and when the lever or handle operated.

Thanking you

Contact a local valves distributor directly and discuss the requirements.

Uuuummmm ... no?!?

What you're describing is probably a gate valve; it's certainly not a plug valve.

Plug valves are rotary ones where a cylindrical section (perhaps tapered at top or bottom) has a channel that passes through it. When it's closed, the channel is perpendicular to the fluid flow; when it's open, the channel is in line with it.

Inother words, plug valves are like ball valves except that instead of having a rotating sphere that modulates or shuts off flow, a cylinder is used instead.

For the life of me, I used to have a lot of trouble remembering this. To any normal person,a plug valve ought to plug, that is fit into a socket or something like a cork fits into a bottle neck. But for some reason, the Namers Of Old decided to call what I might have called 'cylinder valves' plug valves.

Anyway, what you're describing sounds like a globe valve or a gate valve. For safety, I'd go with a 'real' plug valve or a gate valve to shut off the flow. The plug valve will be rotary, the gate valve will have an up-down motion. As for a lever or a handle: there aren't any for plug valves, but there may be some for gate valves.

Sorry for not being more helpful, but at least we've cleared up this valve-naming mess.

Cheers! DZ

What does a fast opening gate or globe valve look like? All the ones I've dealt with are slow to fully open and fully close.

Thanks,

Gary

Please immediately contact M/s Larsen & Toubro Ltd., AUDCO INDIA LTD. at Chennai, India and obtain an OFFER of suitable Plug valve for sulfuric acid, specifying the size. It has been years since I left that company, but I am aware of their continuing manufacture of these famous valves. You must ensure that appropriate lubricant is always filled into the valve stem to enable smooth manual operation via a tubular steel star head wrench or gear drive unit for both manual and motorized/remote control actuation for "Open"/"Close" operation.

Hope this is of use to you!!
