GE Fanuc Programming Software

04/12/2010 2:38 PM

I consider myself to be a relatively decent programmer. I am fluent in both ladder and function block and have been able to utilize any software that I have come across so far. One platform that I have not yet encountered however is GE Fanuc. I am considering a position with a company that makes CNC grinders and their platform of choice for control is GE Fanuc. Is there anyone who has worked with this before? If so, was it all that different from say Siemens or Allen-Bradley? I have a fairly varied industrial background, but I have never before worked with CNC equipment in depth. Do you think that I would be getting in over my head? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you'll have much trouble at all. It has been a while since I worked with the GE Fanuc and TI/Siemens platforms, but the programming concepts and instruction sets were pretty similar, as I recall.

All depends on how up to date the programing software is. If they are using Cimplicity ME (Windows based) then very easy to use. If they are still using the old Machne Edition Dos based software then you will struggle for about a day! All PLC's are the same at the end of the day you get an input do somthing with it and set an output. Stick to that and you can't go wrong. Good luck.

Hello Guest

Be aware that CNC ladder programming resides within the NC control, NOT a separate PLC (though there are machines that use an expansion rack for I/O, resembling the 90-30 series) I have used several Ge Fanuc softwares but there are differences between them and the PMCLAD (which you'll be using):

PMCLAD burns PROMS, rather than upload/download to a CPU module, and you'll have to be removing/inserting chips to a board.

Eventhough the ladder logic is basically the same on most PLCs and NC controllers, you'll have to learn quite a bit of new nomenclature for types of instructions and memory addresses.

Go to a CNC forum and read about the matter, is no big deal anyway.
