Hotmail Closure Account Notice, Real or Phishing?

05/27/2010 9:29 PM

I have a notice that my hotmail account will be closed if I don't reply with user address, password, et al. I am suspicious of this request for information about my long held hotmail address and account.

Anybody else using hotmail still? Have you gotten notices asking for information required to prevent closure of your account?

Classic phishing or worse. Hovering over links (or right-click-properties) usually shows fake target has no connection to real mail provider. Ignore, delete, or report fake to real site.

Absolutely bogus. I've seen dozens of these. I've been using Hotmail for more than a decade, and to my knowledge, Microsoft has never sent out such a notice. Though they have even sent out warnings regarding these kinds of phishing attacks.

Forward the e-mail to Microsoft, they'll be interested.

Sounds like phishing. I had a couple of similar ones re Paypal. Inform Hotmail's security people.

I had a major problem on the same issue. I had a Hotmail a/c, which I had not used for three months. I thought that this was a genuine check and replied. Next thing I know is that various contacts of mine phoning from all over asking where I was and how they should send the money that I asked. My account was hijacked and I could not access it.

Finally with help from Microsoft I recovered my account, set up a strong password, sent a correction message to all contacts.

I now ignore all such messages. I would certainly not want to repeat that experience.

Do not reply, it is a scam to steal your e-mail account, you can delete that e-mail.

I used to get a lot of e-mails like this type at Yahoo since 2 years, and I didn't reply and my e-mail account still valid till now.

If you reply and give them your account password, all your contacts will receive a distress letter from "you" informing them that you are in such a country, and you were robbed, and need their financial help to get home. your well-meaning friends will send "you" money, which, of course will be received by those people who hijacked your account.

then, not only have you lost money, you've lost face to your friends, and you've lost your hotmail account, too.

so, in answer to your question, YES, the eMail is Real Phishing.

From the posts here, the vote is unanimous! You're being phished! Same thing happened to a friend of mine. She gave them her info and they hijacked her account. A few weeks later all her friends got an e-mail supposedly from her saying she was in London attending a seminar and left her purse in a taxi. She lost all her money and credit cards. Could we please wire her enough money to Western Union so she could pay her bills and return home. I called her restaurant and found out she was ok , not in London and her e-mail had been hijacked recently. I notified Hot mail and Western Union, and played with them for a few days, promising to send $500. But first I had to wait til I got paid, then the banks were closed for the weekend and holiday, Then I had to use that money to take my sister to the emergency room. They kept responding thank you, but please hurry! I asked Western Union is they'd like me to tell them money was on the way, and when someone showed up to get it, have the poplice there to grab them, but they did not respond. I finally ended it and wrote "How f-ing stupid do you think we are over here?I was onto your scam in 10 minutes. Get a real job, kiss my A-- and go straight to hell!" I told my friend how I responded to them and she said she couldn't have said it better herself. Then there was the time I played with the Nigerian crook wanting to split a chest full of money. He wanted me to call him. I told him I was too busy, and for him to call my trusted assistant, Sharif DeParman and explain his plan to her. I then gave him the number for the local Sheriff's Deparment.

There out to steal all your contact and use you as a scam subject.

Samething goes for banking institutions. NO banking institution will ask for your information via email. I had it happen to me the first time and I responded and right after responding I started thinking that something was wrong. So I called the bank and while I was waiting for a live person to talk too I got a recording that said they do not ask for customer account information by email.

Samething with cell phones. I was told about an incident where a person was called and told to shut off her cell phone for a few hours so they can load an update into the system. While she was shut off the scammers hacked into her cell phone contact list and started calling all her contacts and told them she was being held hostage and they are too send them money to pay for her release. The person turned on her phone and as soon as she did she got a call from one of her friends and that's how she found out what was going on and had to go through her list to tell people it's not true, some of her contacts had already sent money that can never be recovered.

Criminals have become so slick in their methods that you don't know who to trust. They are so slick that they are actually knowledgable about what they are pretending to be, like some mortgage adjustment firm taking advantage of people that are in adjustable rate mortgages. One big difference is that the real deals don't ask for money up front.

So ignore all emails that say there is some kind of threat to what ever accounts you have because they are not true. Anything online, you can probably afford to have it shut down on you for not responding because then you can contact them directly to find out what's going on. In fact you can contact hotmail directly and see if there is any validity to your email account and they will tell you if it's false.

Dear Transcendian,

Never click in the same mail as it will lead to LOSS OF ALL YOUR PERSONAL DATA.

YOU OPEN YOUR GENUINE and AUTHENTIC MAIL and go to the link CONTACT US AND INFORM THEM ABOUT SUCH NOTICE AND IF POSSIBLE COPY and PASTE the message to them. It may help the genuine service provider to locate the culprits.

I receieved a mail from my close friend that he lost his lap-top, pass port, money and air ticket etc while going to the Heathrow air port and he was held up and with in 2 hours he asked to remit 50,000 $ to a particular account no. When I phoned to his house to find out, he took the phone call and aswered that he is playing with his children.

Similarly my class mate's mail recd and in the same way he is held up at Johennesberg and wanted some money. When I phoned to him he is taking lunch at his house.

If possible contact the police dealing with cyber crime and they may locate the culprits. As an individual in the society we should support all action to pin down the culprits.
