Star-Trek Science

06/16/2010 2:42 PM

My young son and I were watching the newest Star-Trek movie and he asked me when we will be saving lives with all of those gadgets they use and fly so fast so far. I started wondering, How much truth there is in all of this science, and can most of that be achieved?

Surprisingly much of it yes (to some extent).

The following link is a bit out of date but will give you an idea

And the following goes into more depth regarding current developments in teleportation (sorry no matter teleportation).

And an even more current article.

http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2010-05/researchers-achieve-quantum-teleportation-over-10-miles

Development of warp and time travel theory continues but this is going to take quite a while as quantum and dimensional theory are very new fields and a lot of it is still unproven guess work.

It's a little known fact that the HHO technology that drive the Enterprise is being developed in suburban garages even as we speak.

Check out the newest "The Physics of Star Trek" book from Lawrence Krauss. 2007 edition

Of course the older version of the above and "Beyond Star Trek" are also fun books from the same author.

Enjoy!
