12v Worm Drive Motor Needed

06/17/2010 5:17 PM

I am supervising a school project that will probably need the use of a small worm drive motor to lift a roller blind type window in a polytunnel. Can anyone recommend a suitable motor from say a car scrapyard with enough power to do the job? I would estimate the roller to weigh about 10Kg. I am in the uk so this may affect availability of vehicles. Any other sources considered but money is the key.

Thanks

With unusually given to go on, you have a GA from me.

Hit the right auto junk yard and maybe the mgt. will extent a freebee for a school project. Windshield wiper motor should do the trick!

A winch motor would do the job

A car windscreen wiper motor is your best bet... try ebay they are very cheap and extremely powerful!!!

I used one I bought on ebay for £5 to turn my handcranked meat mincer into a monster electric mincer that can devour bones etc...

Its worked well for over 5 years now. (and I still have all my fingers!!!)

A satelite dish positioner crank would work. 18" or 24" throw, linear, moves 100's of pounds, $80 retail for new. Bad is that it is slow, but that could be in your favor if precision positioning is needed.

A windscreen wiper motor is geared down to roughly 60 rpm - but they do have two speeds, selected by a third wire for fast and normal.

Because they are used in millions of cars they are dirt cheap as well as being robust and reliable...

The £5 I paid was for a brand new one....

they are very powerfull i defy you to stop one by holding the output shaft.

( someone will ive no doubt)

and as you say dirt cheap you could always run two or more for more strengh

Go to your local RV dealer. You will find that there is several different motors that are used on RV's to level the unit, to raise satilite dishes and to pulling in and out steps. You might be able to get something out of his scrap bin that will do what you need.

Thanks again when I get nearer to the students solving the problem I will point them in the direction of a local car scrapyard and with a little research on their part I am sure we will get there. Seat, wipers, window and roof motors seem the best bet. Good advice particularly from those of you who have had hands on experience to share.
