Prosthetic Limbs for Cats

06/28/2010 1:30 PM

I was surprised to see that the cat was maimed in a farm Harvester accident over in England.

I wondered why the cat got hurt? Was it lack of training? What laws govern the farm employment of Cats over their in Jersey?

Here is a link: Prosthetic cat

Congrats to the Brits for the technology

Now if they could only keep the cats out of the equipment...

Neat story. I'm not sure why a cat wouldn't get out of the way of the noisy equipment.

A lot of people who harvest hay each year and say very young deer don't know enough to get out of the way. (Their mothers "hide" them in the tall grass and come back for them later - the babies don't move until their mothers return.) The mowers eat them up and the moms don't have anything to find later.

I saw that, the gait looks pretty good, it looks like good simple design.
I s'pose testing stuff like this on discerning creatures like cats is a good idea before letting hoomans try it.
He was prob hunting in the crops or kipping in the harvester.

Two points.

1) Cats are naturally curious and sometimes accidents happen.

2) You cannot employ a cat to do anything, they do what they want. Cats can be trained, but not as farm workers.

Cats are natural born managers;

They manage to get someone else to feed and house them

They manage to get into trouble that invariably someone else has to deal with

They manage to get someone else to deal with their crap.

That is of course true for the 2 legged variety as well..

Well, looks like this one went too far trying to manage to get someone turn around him, just by the powers of his mystic look.

To-day I read an article in local newspaper "The Times Of India" about a pet cat who was treated by a author like a family member fell from 18th floor apartment and died. She was very popular with neighbours and used to roam around the building. Family was totally disgusted.

Maybe there's a epidemic of suicidal cats in europe!

I see this happen often when I was on the farm, accidents to animals not suicidal cats.

When you mowing hay with the haybine, the hay could be 3 feet high and thick.

You cannot see the ground.

Cats would be out in the same hay field mousing. great cover for mice.

If you see the cat you stop but because the haybine can cover 15+ foot swat its unlikely. As the haybine approaches sometimes the cat would lay low and take off at the last moment.....sometimes not.

Afterwards when you raking the hay, you would come across the remnants of cats, skunks, raccoons, porcupines, foxes and deer. But to piece together whats left, the doctors would have to been trained under Dr. Frankenstein.

Suicidal cats - toward the end, our older kitty would run in front of the car when we pulled into the driveway! I'm not sure what that was all about. She also woke up and meowed loudly at about 3AM most nights. Often she would stare at us like she wasn't sure she recognized us, either. (She lived until the ripe old age of 21.)

Fun finds in hay bales - we used to find bunny rabbits, mice, snakes, plastic trash, you name it... not fun!

Our Cat had Catzheimers too.

18 years with us.

Forgot to keep grooming too, the last 4 or 5 months.

I was shocked how much time it took to keep up with the cats grooming.

We had a cat, we did not name him (or we changed the name) until it was 6 months old. Its name was Squish, When they say cats have 9 lives they weren't kidding.

It survived being squished in numerous ways. Door Falling on it, with cows walking on the door, being laid on by a cow a number of times. Loss a front leg, by playing with a running belt and pulley, survived a barn fire.........had a great personality, with all its disabilities, he could keep up with any cat, pitiful looking thing though.

This looks like a plucky little guy, and I'm sure everyone wishes him the best. On a black-joke level, he could be renamed Captain Ahab or Rumpelstiltskin. Apparently some earlier infections have cleared out so that he is doing fine. Wooha! More power to him and the veterinarians for another lease on nine lives.

However, I am curious about various follow-ups, which might merit further reporting. Does he lick or chew on these prostheses in a way that might indicate phantom pain or other irritation? He looks alert and full of verve, so hopefully these concerns are no longer a problem. Before I read of the pads, I wondered if he sounded like a tap-dancer on the floor, which might still be the case if artificial claws have been fitted.

I just love this guy, and I hope all remains well. What a story!

Talk about bad memories! I started mowing hay with our farm tractor when I was 6 years old. I probably killed 3 or 4 cats after accidentally cutting off all 4 legs. I never saw it coming, but I always had to deal with the aftermath.

not uncommon, 6 yos seem young, my dad didn't have me mowing till atleast 12-14 y.o. when he felt I was physically and mentally old enough to handle the tasks. but it still happens
