Level Gauge and Level Transmitter

07/08/2010 11:51 PM

dear all,

what is difference(installation method at site, tolerance, function etc) between level gauge and level transmitter for pressure vessel(tower, drum, etc) at site?

Your question is too broad and non-specific. Tell us precisely what you are trying to do, please.

I'm sorry

what is difference(function) between level gauge and level transmitter for pressure vessel at petrochemical plant?

Whether at a petrochemical plant or not, a transmitter has an electronic output to send the measurement somewhere else, whereas a gauge does not.

Gauge is basically mechanical measurement by which u can see parameter value locally whereas transmittter transmit the data electronically where ever u want

Transmitter(sensor) sends a signal in relationship to the level. A gauge is a functioning device that the level can be read from. It can be a stand alone device or can be connected to a transmitter. Installation depends on the manufacture of the devices.

i guess level gauge' function is device to control about pressure vessel fluid's from H.L.L(High Liquid Level) to N.L.L(Normal Liquid Level). dear all, how think about my guess ?

May be you need a lot of basics and principals related with instrumentation. The attached file is in PDF format (724 Pages & 28.63 MB) is very interesting training course: Instrumentation_and_Control_Course.

Re: Level Gauge and Level Transmitter

another guestion is dimension's tolerance about level gauge and level transmitter.my job is Q.C and my main task is inspect about pressure vessel and tower and reactor etc at fabrication shop. when nozzle's dimension(distance from nozzle to nozzle) inspect about pressure vessel or when pressure vessel body(category "D" joint) is welded to nozzle for level gauge and level transmitter, this distance's tolerance from nozzle to nozzle (nozzle for level gauge) is ±1mm ,but distance's tolerance from nozzle to nozzle(nozzle for level transmitter) is ±6mm. although the functional difference but the same level is, i want to know why difference fabrication tolerance between level gauge and level transmitter.

best regards

The quality control related to the fits and tolerances in workshop for fabrication and assembly of pressure vessels, reactors, columns & heat exchangers are differ from company to another.

At our workshop which hold certificates of authorization U, PP, S, R & ISO 9001, the tolerance for nozzles for level instrument is ± 2 mm.

Note. Level Instrument may be means Level Gauge LG or Level Transmitter LT.

Level Transmitter = Analog device with usually 4-20mA output
Level Guage = Visual Indicator
Level Switch = Binary device, used to operate pumping equipment to maintain level. (on when low, off when high) (adjustable)

A quick question on this from my line of work. (Customs broker) Do both the gauge and the transmitter "measure" the level in the vessel? In other words does the transmitter meet the following definition?

9026.10 Instruments and apparatus for measuring or checking the flow or level of liquids.
