Connect to Software Informer Server Notification

07/12/2010 1:56 AM

On my computer screen (at my home) a window appears (usually when I click the Explorer) which notifies as follows:

Connect to Software Informer Server

Software Informer is the easiest way to keep all your software upto date.

It regularly checks...

Options for OK and Cancell are there and I am selecting Cancell so far.

Please tell me (a)What are the cosequences if I click OK instead of Cancell (b)If the message is malacious how to make this message vanish

(Please bear in mind that I have very limited knowledge of computers)

I would NOT click on OK. Sounds like a scam to get you to buy cheap 'anti-virus' software; or worse.

You can go to Microsoft's website and download 'Microsoft Security Essentials' for free. Microsoft Security Essentials is one of the best protection packages for your PC. The free version does a lot and is very good. It was recommended to me by a systems security manager at a major US university. It will scan your PC for viruses, spyware, malware, etc., and get rid of it all.

This may be a legitimate software service- they do have a web site, and do not show up on any of the warning lists. If you want to remove the software, try going to the Settings menu, Add/Remove Software, and see if it is listed as one of the installed packages. If it is, you can select it and remove it (assuming it is legitimate and not a virus).

Just in case, I would not click on OK if you do not know where the software came from...

Open Internet options, security tab, click on restricted sites and enter the url.

Or go to the Privacy tab and enter the url and click block.

A safe software inspector is known as Secunia Software Inspector; it's also free for personal use and highly recommended.
