	Hi All, Recently I've seen a deterioration in the quality of plain flat washers that are supplied to us. They are coming in with fairly heavy rounded edges on one face and burrs on the other. Previously we would ask for a standard plain washer and get a nice flat, burr-free washer but now it seems that quality has gone out of the window. Does anyone out there know what standard quality grades there are for small metric washers (M3 to M6) and which one would be a suitable grade to quote for a good commercial quality (i.e. flat with no burrs). 	Probably a bad die punching out the washers. __________________ Give me enough duct tape and I can fix anything!

	Your supplier has probably switched his source for washers to a cheaper Chinese source. I would question the supplier and demand the quality you previously had or find another supplier. __________________ Mr.Ron from South Ms.

The burrs are there because they do not sharpen the dies in the press and the machine operator is not looking at the quality of his or her work, nor is the inspector, or they did not go into the tumbler to remove the burrs. I don't know what application your using it for so I can't give a material but here is a reference for you of material.

	In your purchase order you can, and should, specify the maximum entry radius and the maximum burr for punch press manufacturing (which is probably all you'll get - easy to set up, and many can be manufactured at one time with proper set up). There is probably and ASTM specification covering metal washers and the limits, or tolerances of manufacturing (diameter - ID & OD - thickness, punch entry radius, and burr), as well as material composition and mechanical properties. As for your supplier: just go to Washersnet.com (or others) to find other suppliers of metal washer where you can find ISO certified manufacturers of quality manufacturing. there are a lot of companies out there making washers, too many that you have to worry about the quality of just one outfit. During these times of economic upheaval, manufacturers are will to go the extra mile in quality to get your business. The costs will also be favorable. 	Yeah, you have to tell them EXACTLY what you want, or you won't get it. If you DID specify, and you didn't get it, they need to eat it. After some digging online I found these guys and they've worked really well for us. http://www.bokers.com/ __________________ Larko
