A ship can carry a boat. A boat can't carry a ship.

Ahoy, matey, there be olde nautical lore in which a ship was a square-rigger of three or more masts.

As distinguished from brigs, barks, ketches, yawls, etc.

I think your definition is still valid, too.

Aagh - "A Ship of the Line." GA.

Boat from Norse Bat - small thing to sail on water or to put gravy in.

Ship - from English scip - big thing to sail on water or a three master with bowsprit. (as per Tornado).

Boat can be ambisextrous - a ship is always "She".

You ship cargo on a ship. If you're not shipping cargo it's a boat. (That's what I was once told.)

This definition will be very elastic, meaning different at different places in the world.

Although USPS ships even without ship and Europe has Big Ferry Boats and Mail Boats.

And the Netherlands, who explored the oceans, call(ed) a small boat a ship.

But I find the answers from our US fellows make sense and pass.

We should make some good standards. Life seems complicated.

In the Royal Navy, a submarine is a boat. Everything else is a ship.

As in HMS dinghy, lifeboat, etc?

Gilbert and Sullivan could have a field day with this....

Or Flanders and Swann.

Depending on how boisterous the captain is, he may declare his 8 foot dingy a ship.

Hi, the smaller one is called as boat and the bigger one is called as ships. Some times tug boats are used to pull the ships in and around harbor. and often ships are equipped with small boats for rescue.--R.K
