Engine Start Failure

08/07/2010 7:34 AM

My Mercedes C240 has no problem to start the engine the first time. then i drive in 90 F ambient temperature for 5-15 min., park it for 10 min. and when I want to restart the engine it doesn't start! the display indicate " Check Engine". after waiting for 15-20 min. the engine starts with no problem! the display "Check Engine" is gone.

what is the root cause of this behavior? are there any sensors malfunctioning? if so, which one and where are they located.

It is a Gasoline engine.

However, I changed out the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor (CPS) and it works!!

It was a pain to replace it because it is located on the driver side, on the back of the engine between the engine and firewall and attached on the transmission housing. To reinstall it, I came up with a trick. I taped the new CPS with the 1/4" Torx screw and 1/4" Torx socket and placed it together in the hole of the transmission housing. Once placed in the hole, it was easy to place an extension onto the socket and to tightening the Torx screw.

Thank you all who helped !!

Dear Guest, If it is a petrol engine you have, I used to have a Peugot 405 which almost had the same symptoms, whenever I switched the engine off, and tried starting again within a few minutes, it refused, I took it back to the dealer, he admitted that Peugot had a problem with the petrol vapourising in the carb.their way of getting around it was to fit a temperature switch in the cooling system, which allowed the cooling fan to carry on turning after the ignition was switched off, this had the effect of removing the heat from the engine compartment, thereby cooling the carb. down, from memory the fan would run for approx. 10 mins, and then shut down, the cause would have been made worse by the fact there was a generous sound deadening blanket stuck to the bonnet lid, Don't know if this helps. Heat under the bonnet!

Hi, I had a similar problem in a Toyota Corona, Tried everything, until finally the thermostat failed. After fitting the new thermostat, the motor ran at a slightly lower temperature than originally. And I never had a starting problem after that. The extra temperature must have overheated the fuel in the float bowl, causing the flooding. Your themostat may have raised it's working temperature.

Why not get the failure codes read out by the manufacturer's represesentative.....then you will KNOW exactly what the failures are due to.

They get stored even if the failure fixes itself when it cools down.

Hi Andy, thanks for your reply, in my case I went direct to my dealership, at first they denied there was a problem, then conceded that the manufacturer knew about the problem all along because they had an answer of a sort, fit the extra temp. S/W! I don't personally don't think they should have brought that engine out without ironing all the bugs out first, I don't live in a hot country, but it happened to me.

In the days of simple carburetor gasoline engines, Fords were prone to have vapour lock in the fuel pump when they were hot. Gasoline vapours would fill the fuel pump when the pump was hot and the car wouldn't start until the vapors condensed to liquid because the pump would only pump liquid and not vapors.

If you were in a hurry you ran cold water over the fuel pump to cool it. If water was not available a couple cans of cold beer slowly poured over it would usually take care of it. Don't attempt to recycle the beer, it gets nasty with grease and oil in it.
