When a Box or Chassis Needs a Handle

08/31/2010 12:33 PM

Is there a Mil Spec that specifies when a Chassis should have handles, either because of size or weight?

This may be a long shot. The Air Transport Association has a spec (ATA100 I think) that MAY have some information.

This spec covers construction of "roadie" cases and the like.

This may be a dead end, too. I can't remember all the details.

Air Transport Association (ATA)

Thanks, but I did not see anything pertinent in ATA100.

RLJones,

Good luck to you. There are a lot of very intelligent people around here and one of them can usually help out.

Cheers.

I think you want MIL-STD-1472:

http://www.everyspec.com/MIL-STD/MIL-STD+%281400+-+1499%29/MIL_STD_1472D_1209/

It's a pdf download.

Nice shootin!

Section 5.9.11.5 relates the information required.

As well, looks like this may apply:

5.9.11.4.2: Manual vertical push and pull forces required shall not exceed the applicable fifth percentile peak or mean force values of Table XXV, or those given in Figure 21, if more appropriate to the force and movement characteristics of the task.

Big document... 30.4MB.

RLJones, one other point you need to consider, some control panels and other equipment have handles, not so much for lifting and pulling as to act as bumper guards for the controls of the equipment. Also, if the device is to be mounted in a moving vehicle, the handles also help the operator stabilize himself while he is trying to operate the controls. it prevents the operator from hitting the wrong switch or knob when the vehicle decides to lurch as he reaches for the controls.

Generally speaking, my rule of thumb is when in doubt whether a handle is needed, I put one in unless there is a good reason not to.
