Vortex Tube

08/31/2010 11:58 PM

hi sir i ,Nillesh student of an mechanical engg.(B.E) , C.K.pithawala engg. & technology college. in final year project we are thinking about making the vortex tube refrigeration system. as we supplied air, cold air & hot air both will come out through the vortex tube device if we are using this device only for cooling purpose, the hot air will be wasted. if we want to utilize hot air , we can connect a Rankine cycle with the nozzle of hot air and in rankine cycle ,we have to use a gas which boiling temp. is downwards respect to vortex tube device capacity. as this concept,we can increase the cooling capacity but it's difficult for us to construct a working model of this rankine cycle, which also may not be covered in our four student budget. sir,if other related applications are possible to shown in working model in budget of around 15,000 rs.between four students. please give some guidance to construct the model to show the application of vortex tube refrigeration system device. please reply me or PM me. Thanking You!

It is highly inadvisable to post an e-mail address in an international forum. E-mail addresses are easily harvested by spambots. They quickly bombard it with advertisements for non-prescription pharmaceuticals, scam requests to update on-line banking details, links to matters of an intimate nature and scams purporting to be about getting large sums of money out of Nigeria, rendering the address practically useless.

Buy an off the shelf vortex tube instead of building one, that will save money for your rankine cycle engine.

hi

thanx for 4 reply

but is there any other idea you know that i can use for showing applications of the vortex tube..which is better then rankine cycle idea

i have to show sm applications in which both cold & hot air are used.

means if we are using vortex tube for cooling purpose then hot air will be wasted so have u any idea in ur mind dat we can use both air hot & cold as a applications

on the cooling end of the tube you can use in machine applications where the metals/materials react to solvents or cutting fluid.

Also use the cool end when doing sanitary welding (stainless) to keep the material your welding cool so it would not deform from the heat where a heat sink is not enough.

On the warm side, at the ship yard where people are sand blasting in the cooled outside conditions, in the suit we had hooked up the vortex tube hot side to keep the people comfortable in the below zero temperatures.......had varying success.

thanx my frnd for ur rpl.

bt i have to show applications in my project .

i am thinking cold side part for cooling purpose & from hot side thinking to run a stirling engine.

I see the problem we, the manager were looking for a cheap fix for the workers working in full protective gear sandblasting. The air/temperature was unregulated.......it was either too hot or too cold.

Heat water for domestic use?

use in Stirling cycle engine?

use on the hot side of a Seebeck/Peltier device to generate power directly?

Spin a turbine directly?

Use in a steam reciprocating engine?

Use as a heat source for an absorption cycle refrigerator?

A Barton Evaporative cycle engine?

in you tube vortex tube video ,it shows the hot air temp. nearer to 90 degree, bt water boiling temp. is 100 degree ,so we cant produce steam and run the cycle.

video link-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJ6-bnjn9Es

and in this video temp. is in celcius ?

bcz sm1 has commented dat temp. is in china or japanese unit

thanx !

There are other working fluids with lower boiling points that you could use, HCFC's, Alcohols, etc.

hi Rorschach

may i know that

in output of vortex tube it gives continous cold & hot air without varying in temp.?

if it varies then stirling engine will run continous?

as per ur knowledge how much possibilites are there ?

Temp is a function of air flow. maintain constant airflow and temp will be constant.

thanx rorschach!

using vortex tube ,

the cold air for cooling process,

and from hot air want to run stirling engine

in advance seebeck/peltier device can also be used for voltage generation

& may i know how much electrisity /power is required to run a compressor aroun 4-6 bar ??

Re: Vortex Tube

Not sure off the top of my head, especially as you don't specify a CFM/volume required, but it's going to be VERY inefficient. Compressing air is about the LEAST efficient way of storing or transferring energy. If compressed air is all you got, or is available as a byproduct of a process, that is one thing, but if you are compressing air for this specifically, you are wasting money and energy.

Perhaps this link will help.
