What do you mean by large size?

Which suppliers have been contacted already and why is there a reluctance for these suppliers to provide information?

He could always nip down to Machine Mart and order a 600MVA set.

Could be that there's a backlog on ordering though, everyone needs a couple of them at this time of year.

Merle,

Perhaps now you can see why PWSlack and I don't take you seriously.

The idea that a multi-million corporation would be asking on the internet "where can we buy a turbo-generator set from" is laughable.

The suggestion given above are correct. You have to contact the OEMs of the equipments for the necessary budgetary quotations. Afterall as I understand from your other posts you are working for quite large project.

For this sizes, the turbines will not be off the shelf and may be custom made for your available head (and tail) conditions.

Usually the procedure is to carry out the total project/feasibility analysis and then you get approximate estimates of the inputs, you may float your tender.

I can understand the reluctance of some of the CR4 members here to give advise based on your previous questions asked on CR4 including the following ones

I am working for a mega hydro- project.

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/54157

and

Hi everyone, I would appreciate if you all could recommend a training institute/ firm that gives training in "Electrical machine design" like Generator, transformer and switchgear.

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/54154

You are asking some rather basic (and somewhat disturbing) questions for someone who appears to be a paid design Consultant/Project Estimator or Project Manager on an actual hydro plant project, most of which can be found with a simple internet search.

Can you provide us more information about your specific project and why you are asking these broad questions please.

Well Jack, you should talk, wind farm manager. You should know by now people can't rely on the sun and the breeze for power!!!

Big companies like Siemens, ABB and GE all have hydro-power generation equipment divisions, but most of them will not give you the time of day if they perceive that you don't know what you are talking about.

Besides, most everything you would need in a "large" hydro plant would be negotiated. It's not stuff that is going to be in a catalog with a price list anyway. The best you can possibly do is to find the prices listed for used equipment and maybe extrapolate that they typically sell for about 1/3 the cost of new, but that depends a lot on the condition.

It would have been better if you could have given your back ground (present occupation, location etc.) so that the purpose of your question could be appreciated. Generally hydro generation plants are tailor made based on the head, discharge location etc. and not available off the shelf. You may approach through your organization to reputed manufacturers asking them to give budgetary offer (off course you need to give them complete detailed in put which I presume you would know.

Only company I can immediately think of for the supply of transformers would be ABB - [Asea Brown Boveri]. They're in most countries.

I would suggest googling some projects to find which suppliers were used. I would expect that the Three Gorges Dam in China would have used locally designed/made product. Aswan Dam in Egypt had Russian backing. The Snowy project in Australia probably used British equipment, but all of these are speculation.

My local garden centre has a hydroponics department, I'll ask them if they have any catalogues and price lists for high head (tall) plants. They'll also be able to supply the necessary plant equipment.

Hi everyone, thanks. I already made a cost estimate based on DPR of one project which have almost similar features. It was based on 2008 price level. I used the price escalation factor.

Don't worry guys. I am newbie to such work and I am just learning something before I actually get into it. I will get trained at our consultant works. I am just doing little bit of homework.

You may all rest in peace.

And yeah, my parents taught me not to laugh at others for asking questions. There is no such thing as "stupid questions". There are only stupid answers. Hence you all proved it right.

(The above msg is directed to those ill mannered people. And heart-felt thank you to those for those sincere and proper directions).

So now we have gone from I am working for a mega hydro- project to I'm doing a bit of homework.

If you had said it was homework in the first place you may have got a better response. As it was trying to pass yourself of as a consultant or what ever has made you look foolish.

People tried to help you at first, but as things began to get far fetched then the derision started.
