Custom Built Rotary Vane Crank Pump

12/03/2010 1:24 PM

Hi my name is Shaun, I'm need something unique built for a experiment and I want to know if anyone knows where I can have it built. I need two small light weight rotary vane pumps that connect to each other via a belt made, they must be able to work with head 4 feet or lower, speed isn't a big issue. However what is important is one vane pump is able to pick up drive from falling water and transfer that drive to the other vane pump which transports water upwards, the volume of water that the second pump transports uphill must be equal to the volume of water that pushes past the first pump, any less and it won't work. I would like half inch pvc sockets to be on the top and bottom of these rotors, if there are any problems with what I'm asking please let me know I'll try to make changes to the experiment. Small rotary hand crank pumps can be used, the cranks can be removed and replaced with gears and a belt can be used to connect them. Thanks for your time.

You will be able to pump the water up only about 60% as high as where it came from, so you could do better with just a hose.

Shaun,

You'll have to rewrite the laws of physics before this can work.

You'll need to account for friction of both units and inside the piping.

Good luck.

Hello Shaun.

I agree with the other members. Your description "...the volume of water that the second pump transports uphill must be equal to the volume of water that pushes past the first pump, any less and it won't work." is a 'Unity Device', or perpetual motion. If the volume of pumped water exceeded the volume of the falling water, it would be 'Over-Unity'. While either would be pretty cool, they simply will never work. Something that comes to mind is Boyle's Perpetual Motion Scheme, which does not/will not work either.

Now, with all of that said, you did tell us this is an experiment. Are you looking to build this for your own discovery, or were you looking for a way to really try and make it work? If you wish to continue and build it anyway, we can help, but your desired experiment results will not be realized.

Perpetual motion aside, the cheapest and easiest way is to determine your operating parameters and find one that is already manufactured that meets your criteria. I don't know the cost of having 2 pumps custom built to your specs, but I'll guarantee it is more than just purchasing.
