Obstacles to Voting and Replying

12/21/2010 10:17 PM

We are already familiar with the message "You or someone else has done this operation [voting GA or OT] too many times. Please try again tomorrow."

That was already totally dopey, but now we can't even reply to posts....

One can only hope that this new glitch is an inept tinkering with the system that will soon be resolved.

This reply is a figment of our collective imaginations and is not real....

It will self destruct in 30 seconds...

Worked fine. Someone having troubles replying to threads?

Nothing was changed with the system, "inept" or otherwise (but thanks for the vote of confidence).

There are "daily" limits on posting, and my guess is that you hit one of them.

The daily limit for dumb comments must be pretty high...

There are "daily" limits on posting...

Is that to keep just a few (LynLynch and Tornado) from monopolizing the site? If it is, it's not working!

Apparently, it doesn't keep idiots from posting either.

I do vote GAs/OTs fairly often, but the "Too many people have done this..." feature kicks in seemingly randomly, with no particular relation to how many votes I have cast.

This recent event was the first time I couldn't even reply to a post, and I had made few or no other recent replies. I realize that there may need to be "circuit breakers" in the system to contain spam and whatnot, but the thresholds seem to be excessively low, and all but inscrutable.

This is frustrating when someone gives a superb answer, but I can't vote it a GA.

As I'm tightwad with my votes, I've not run into 'you have voted too much'. But it's not a such bad idea, in the light of some behavior, to ration the OT side of things at least.

My "done it too often" frustration is when I've walked away from some peanut ranting at me, even challenging me to personal combat?, who has posted twice as much as I have in that "day", to I find I can't post, even in unrelated threads. Yet the ranter can keep ranting, as long as he likes, and post wherever he likes.

Naturally I've done the numbers on these odd occasions - so have come to the conclusion my 'limit' is largely determined by who the moderator feels is 'less drama' to hand a "time out" to. A bit annoying if I have already posted I'm out of the "discussion". But that's Life.

But clearly - at times - moderation doesn't understand, how inciting physics and math blasphemy is, nor recognise who is the heretic.

Judgment by 'who seems to be jerking who's chain', often leaves/encourages the ranting fools to drive any thread onto 'their topic' and into the ground.

I'd call that outcome "more dramatic" for CR4 credibility, but that's only my view.

All in all - as there is no numerical consistency - I tend to take an unexpected "done it too often" as "this one is less likely to write a threatening letter" = a 'Least Lunatic' vote.
