Electric Billing

01/22/2011 7:24 PM

We are the biggest electric power consumer in our City. Now we seriously feel that service provider is cheating us on submitting fake or excessive billing. Their method of calculation is quite difficult. What are the suggestions in this matter. should we hire some consultant or try ourself to find the truth.

Obviously, both, in spades*, as we say.

* the term "in spades" means in a very serious way.

If you are the largest consumer of electricity, your switch gear must have some sort of metering gear on it that is yours. What does your metering say? Does their consumption figures make sense based on your load patterns?

You should obtain the by-laws (code) governing your service provider.

It is quite possible that you exceed the maximum demand set and approved by the authorities and and that a penalty is added to your account.

By watching your demand you may avoid this penalty.

Your accounts may also work on a sliding scale. That is your tariff is higher because you use more power.

You should negotiate a better deal.

What is my understanding from pakitani friends that, most of people, industries are not paying electricity bill. Even if you pay, the money will not go to the government. Local Politicians, buerocrates and leaders will share it. So my advice is to stop paying bill.

That might work until they shut off the electricity, and require a penalty fee for reconnecting it. (Unless that's the way things really are done in Pakistan.)

The OP might want to explore whether any pirates have tapped into the lines downstream of the utility's meter.

You should check the efficiency of your equipment as well as checking to see if anyone may be "tapping" into your lines (stealing power). I have seen some electrical set-ups there that scare me and wouldn't be surprised to find that you are being cheated by the electric supply company as well as being robbed by your neighbors.

Hiring an outside company to check into these issues is your best alternative. Choose your investigator wisely.

Best of luck!
