Regarding Fire Pump & Lift Capacity

01/23/2011 1:04 AM

CAN I KNOW HOW TO CALCULATE THE FIRE PUMP & LIFT CAPACITY IN hp OR kw FOR HIGH RISE BUILDING, COMMERICAL ETC.
HOW TO CALCUTATE THE STARTING CURRENT FOR MOTORS..

Theoretical hp = gpm x 8.34lb x head (in feet)/33,000.

The head includes the vertical height plus piping pressure losses (including the pressure required for spray nozzles), so it depends on the piping design.

The theoretical hp must then be divided by the pump efficiency to get the required hp. This depends on the type, design, and mfr of the pump, and will be around 0.90 with a well selected pump.

The starting current of a motor is about 6 x the full load current, depending on starting method. The actual multiplier is given by a code letter on the motor.

Fire fighting is too critical to get your design approved or calculated over the internet.

If the flow is not restricted the flow and power consumption will be more for a fire on the first floor than on any other floor. (have a look at the pump curve)
