Toyota Camry 92 electrical problem

03/29/2007 8:04 AM

For the last three(3) years, on a occasionaly base (intermittently) all of the marker lights, tail lights and licence plate light remained "ON" after the engine was stopped. My Canadian sedan is equipped with the Daylight Running light and that works "O.K" lighting up the headlights as soon as the engine starts and kill them when the engine stops. A few years back, I've bought one of those "Chilton's" do it yourself maintenance for the Camry's but the electric troubleshooting portion lacks accuracy when it comes to identify the specific components on the car itself... When I pulled the fuse, obviously the lights extinguishe but as soon as I put back in the circuit the problem still persists at that's without the engine running and the keys are out of the ignition. According to the documentation there's a "Tail Light" relay that controls the above lights but I can't locate it under the hood in the normal Fuselink/relays boxes. Is there any chance that the relay is located somewhere else inside of the car or is there another device acting up?

Almost certainly a relay sticking. You need to look for ancillary relays, and you will find that the Japanese are fiendishly clever when it comes to hiding them! Is it just the rear lights? Some Japanese cars have a small control box on the rear valence beside the light clusters. Sorry to be less precise, but I'm not familiar, on a personnel level, with the model in question.

A colleague has just told me that Toyota are very good about putting wiring diagrams in an e mail. Try Toyota Japan direct, I'd be interested in how you get on!

My 94 Camry 300 does similar tricks. My solution is to reset the alarm system a few times.

Sorry, the question was about how to reset an alarm system. My son bought a 92 toyota camry and the horn goes off when he opens any of the doors or hatchback. He has to turn the ignition to turn off the horn. Any suggestions?

If you have any intent on keeping the car for any length of time, it might be worth the effort to buy a Toyota shop manual explicitely for the '92 Camry. Chiltons (and others) try to pack so much information for so many cars into one book, that the book becomes worthless. The Toyota book will probably be more expensive than Chiltons, but you will find it worth the expense.

Bill

Check with your Toyota dealer.

Thanks for the inputs guys!

I've contacted a few, close by, Toyota dealers for info and surprisingly their clerks are either not interrested or don't know much about the product they used to sell or support a generation ago. On the other end, who would be interrested to dig out 15 years old prints for some Joe Blo Mechanic on the phone...perharps in persons it might had been different but again is the trip worth it....if I can't get a clear answer from them on the phone...

Thanks again for all of your comments and suggestions...

Try your library for reference books like 'Mitchell's or Motor' manuals. Also, which we have in our library is free connection to ' Alldata' all reference to mechanics.
