Mango Tree is Dying - HELP!!!

02/01/2011 3:06 AM

Hi

We have a couple of mango trees at our place and it seems they are dying the place is usually empty to it hasn't been watered in a while I guess, they're pretty big about 30ft I think. One of the two, basically everything is dying but the other has two big branches that come out of the trunk and one of them is dying but the other isn't, the leaves on that one are still green.

Is there anything else we can do to save the trees besides just watering them cause I dont think the water is working.

There are many things that can kill trees. You need to hit google and search for problems that are specific to your trees to find a cause and hopeful cure.

If the trees are valuable to you (which they seem to be, based on the concern you express) it would be well worth calling in a professional arborist.

When my home was built 10 years ago, the grading contractor damaged some of the roots on a grand old oak tree. I talked to an arborist about my choices, and he said either cut it down now while it is manageable, or spend the same amount of money for selective trimming and deep-root therapy. I took the second option and the tree is thriving today.

yes, someone who knows Mango cultivation. It could be out of trace nutrients, as well as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. It could be riven by insects etc etc, or a fungus infection. It was probably weakened by low water.

If you add fertilizer, it should be at a low rate at first.

Where do you live? if you happen to be in Australia , particularly QLD ,Consider water level rises, we have a few trees that have been dying off as a result of the water table rising after the floods.

Some insects must have infected at the root level. Consult experts form agriculture department and apply medicine . Otherwise it will spread to other areas also.

A 30' tree should not need watering. It is a mature tree and not a small bush. My tree in the backyard seems to thrive on benign neglect. But it is in the tropics with lots of sun.

This report from the University of Florida may help:

If the trees were previously watered, they may have never have (needed to) developed a proper root system. So watering may help if its not too late.

But water on the earth's surface is now too little, too late.

You need to sink a pipe under/in the root system and flood it twice a day AT LEAST!! We are talking about a lot of water......got a river handy?

Try that for at least till next winter/cold season.....if you have one!!!

No guarantees though....sorry!

Cut off dead stuff. Inspect. Dig to inspect roots.

If bark peeling before branch died, possible fungus or under-bark pest. If lots of holes, boring pest.

What was condition of leaves and colour before they started to fall? They may indicate excess water, missing element/s in soil. Any curling of leaf (with web?), sap-sucking pest. Rotting root, possible excess water.

Unless you've had a long drought, lack of water unlikely problem. Drought brings on lots of fruit. Had any fruit lately?

If really big tree, like yours, old age maybe. Bark will peel, roots rot.

Lots of possibilities. You need assistance, quickly.
