Gate Valve & Water Meter Proper Installation

02/27/2011 2:29 AM

Hello all, may i ask your comments on the picture below,

Is this installation acceptable? If not, what should be the standard distances between gate valve and water meter?

There's no requirement for a spacer between the valve and meter so it looks fine to me

Looking over to this type of installation two situations may be there:-

1) The flow is from meter to valve- In this case if the valve is partially opened then it will cause a back pressure on meter rotating mechanism & within a short time meter will start malfunctioning,

2) The flow is from valve to meter- In this case if valve is partially opened at outlet of valve there is turbulent flow & this turbulence may damage the meter,

Thus in both the cases the meter life will reduced, so better way is to install meter at such a distance where the turbulence effect is less.

All of the above comments may be invalid.

You can only get the correct answer by contacting the Meter Vendor and ask them.

Dollars to donuts, this meter is some sort of swash-plate or rotary screw configuration (positive displacement) that is not particularly susceptible to turbulence. Furthermore, the gate valve will normally be wide open, so it won't introduce extreme turbulence, anyway. The flow arrow in the picture isn't perfectly distinct, but it looks left-to-right.

I must say, I haven't come across this type of Water Meter installation before. I have installed meters for Compressed Air, Natural gas, Nitrogen gas and Water and they generally recommend 3 x the diameter of the pipe work with no elbows, valves etc.

Last year I installed a water meter in a section of 4" NB 304L stainless steel schedule 10s pipe. The meter was flanged at both ends and the manufacturer recommended 5 x diameter with no restriction upstream or down stream.

To contradict what I have just said some water boards also advise the meter is installed in a bypass section for isolation / maintenance purposes.

In my opinion the installation also looks unsightly. I hope you are not responsible and I have offended you.

It might be worth checking with your local water supplier for any advice as previously mentioned.
