Do Humans Influence the Weather?

04/04/2007 5:12 PM

By analysing the weather data of 15 years two German meteorologists could prove that human activity is influencing the weather.

Statistically proven: 20% more clouds on Saturday than on Monday.

Reason: during the week human activity brings more dust in the air: resulting in more clouds on Saturday and nice weather on Monday.

So it is true: the weather is improving when the weekend is over.

Does someone have the full story of this? I only heard it on the news and saw an interview on the item.

Will it never end! They can prove anything just so long as people are gullible, ignorant and plain stupid. I am sure that given enough money and time I could prove anything within reason.

Well here I can be as rude as you: Statistics is a very dangerous science and need to be used by real people. If you want to get a proof of something you can easily use a statistic method but the fact that they used 15 years of data proves that they knew that you need lots of data to be correct.

I use statistics to find out if a change is really an improvement or just good/bad luck.

It is for the evaluation of the data that I would like to have more details.

It all depends where you are the land mass of Europe is very different to the UK and this will again cause a different out come. You can not say why it is that the weather does or does not behave in any particular way just by using statistics. Many things have such a degree of chaos involved in their behaviour that a random study can give any sort of information as desired. The wind, sun, and rain can all interact so as to confuse even the very best of us. The jet stream and Atlantic lows/highs will determine how the weather works out. Here we can get dry weather for weeks at a time or wet weather for several months. There is NO particular tie up with mans emissions. I have fifty plus years to go over.

Here is at least one thing I recognise: dry weather for weeks (or even day's) and wet for months.

As you state: it depends on where in Europe you do the measurement: If you are on the coast the human influence will be low. Living in central Europe will bring a huge influence as the air you breath crosses heavily inhabited zones for days.

Wind from the west is wet but rather clean, eastern wind is dry but un healthy.

Where shall I start?

Cars: the exhaust contains micro particles that remain airborne and move to the upper layers of the atmosphere. The positive effect are the nice colored begin and end of the day. Negative: more clouds are formed and more rain falls down in the weekend as the concentration reaches threshold values. Traffic is lower in the weekend so the rain cleans the sky and the process can start all over again on Monday.

Household heating: fuel is burned in very uncontrolled conditions to heat. Installations last for years without serious maintenance. In theory you should maintain it but even in the highly organised world (Western Europe) this is not forced by regular checks and registry. Imagine what the status is in the rural newly added regions of the EU or the growing areas of China and India. The result is a very polluting fume exhaust.

Industry, Agriculture, Wood culture, ....

Everywhere where we change the average of natural processes we have influence.

The three day's stop of air traffic in the US after 9/11 had an influence on the weather.

It depend on what is defined as nice weather. A farmer will define rain as nice weather while other will prefer sunshine.

I made the following observations a while ago.

During a dry spell we had water restrictions and suburbs were only allowed to water gardens during specified hours with a hose.

On 3 consecutive Saturdays it started to rain while i was watering the garden.

The question was: Was the rain because of or in spite of all of us in the suburb watering our gardens?

Many souls find Monday quite depressing, and suspect it has little to do with the weather...
