Help with Materials for Pop-up Device

03/21/2011 10:49 PM

hi I am trying to design a pop-up shape that folds flat and can pop up into a sphere. Something like this: http://images.splitcoaststampers.com/data/gallery/14665/2009/03/09/popupcard1inside_by_hooked_on_stampin.jpg?ts=1236639802 I was wondering if anyone knows any materials that can be folded and still "remember" their shape so they can pop back up when pulled out of an envelope? But I'm not looking for metals or plastics. More cardboard/paper type materials. Any ideas, even unrealistic ones, are welcome. Thank you.

In your example, there might be a way to attach an internal rubber band that would pull the shape upright.

Or an external rubber band with a temporary adhesive tack holding it flat, able to break when the envelope is opened. The structure could be in card or thin pvc.

It's tends to make it more difficult to get an answer that works when you start more than one thread asking the same question.

Perhaps something like one of these honeycomb balls, pre-loaded with a rubber band or spring, might work for you? They fold flat and open into a sphere.

Thin foam rubber, as sold in craft shops, should work after tailoring and gluing. For a quick prototype, you could wrap it over a sphere to cut darts into a disk, and make two matching hemispheres.

Fascinating Chris. Always again fascinating. I saw others taking it to the nth degree. I coincidentally ran into this thread and when I looked at your first link it reminded me of something. You know what.

How are the pot holes in Canada going? Get the drift? If you cut them in half what do we get? I have to think about it every day or at least when I leave the house.

Gosh, this is soooOH off topic! Nudge , nudge, nudge.

I know there will be an email in my in-box when I leave this page, standard procedure, Ky.
