Inconsistant Microsoft PAINT

04/19/2011 3:23 AM

Several years ago, I started using microsoft PAINT to make drilling templates and such on my old Windows ME machine. I discovered by trial and error that if I made my drawings at 120 dots per inch, printing them gave me full scale drawings. I was quite happy with this situation.

NOW We needed a new computer so the wife/boss/whatever... got a new HP with Windows 7, and I got her computer with Windows XP. It turns out that the XP version of paint uses 87 dots per inch resolution which screws up all my earlier work. So I went over to the Windows 7 version and IT uses 96 dots per inch resolution.

Does anyone know of a way that I can change the resolution on the new machines to 120 dots per inch? I looked through the Help files but didn't see anything that might help.

Much Thanks

Bill

yo Sciesis2,

These templates are they printed on a printer ?

If yes then you might be able to change it somehow in the printer resolution

Or another printer driver.

Had something similar with changing from Y2K ->>> XP a few years back

Did you change monitors? I think the problem may be with the screen resolution of the monitor, not the Windows software itself.

Try changing the resolution setting of your monitor. On the main desktop right click, then go to Properties. Click on the Settings tab. You may then see a slider bar for screen resolution. Try a screen resolution that will give you the 120 dots per inch you want. (Perhaps you can set the new monitor to the same setting as the old monitor.) You may find, though, that your new monitor can't give you exactly 120 dots per inch (or, the same resolution as your old monitor).

Another option would be to change your printer set up (i.e., change its dots per inch setting.)

I don't know if this will do what you are hoping, but it's worth a try. There's a registry setting for the BMP width and height. Here's a copy and paste from the website I found this on:

You can set the starting resolution in the registry. With regedit.exe
open to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint\View

and in the right pane double click on BMPWidth and BMPHeight, in each
case select Decimal before entering the Width/Height you want, in
pixels, as default

Be sure you set the units to Decimal when you edit this. If this works, come back and let us know.

you have to use another graphic program other than paint to change the image resolution to 120.

if you open different images from the net in paint, and look at the attributes, you will see it shows different dpi.

unfortunately it doesn't seem to allow you to change the dpi in paint.

but will open images that have their dpi set differently.

also watch what type of file you save as, in order to maintain the dpi

(jpg is an algorithm, and decreases file size automatically with each save... bmp is a ms bitmap, and does not decrease in size.. but I don't know if it will automatically change the dpi when saved.. you have to experiment I guess, or contact MS. they are pretty helpful to me at times)

cheers,

Chris

I realise this is like asking a local for directions, and, being told: "I wouldn't even start from here." But:-

I think you'd be better off looking for a free CAD package and using that to re-create your templates.

How many templates have you got?

(What's up with the spell checker: keeps deleting my message field?)

You could make use the freeware programme GIMP to make a blank .BMP file or template. GIMP allows you to set the image size and resolution independently. Not all file types save the resolution, but .BMP does.

GIMP is a very powerful but horrendously user unfriendly programme, however all you need to do to create templates is the File, New command and then File, Save As.

Thanks for the help. I may have to break down and find a real CAD program. That would be the proper solution (I think).

http://www.freecad.com/

DoubleCAD is probably the most comprehensive free package out there:-
