Purpose and Functions of Ribs

04/24/2011 12:12 PM

hi. I have seen ribs in a lot of pillars and stuctures but not certain what they are for? i want to design support pillars for beams and am wondering if adding ribs to the base would help? anyone? how do i incorporae them in my calculations?

Ribs add strength. People spend years studying this in school.

Maybe a civil/mechanical engineer can help.

Put the ribs on the BBQ and keep away from structures.

If you've got to ask these questions you're not capable of the calculations.

I wonder how many ribs and gussets are really effective. Typically they move the moment-resisting cross-section of a column only a small distance, decreasing the moment arm by some small fraction such as 5%.

Could be right - a bit of "feelgood factor". Neither Grecian nor Roman columns had much by way of ribs, and some of them have lasted pretty well.

Replicas I've seen in Oxford are based on a vertical H-beam surrounded by a concrete sleeve, and they seem to work ok.

Maybe they're all over-engineered.

(I know bugger-all about it - jus' sayin').

what do you mean by "ribs in pillars and structures" ?

can you provide a more specific example, or image please?

Maybe you should ask your instructor, who should know when you will need these skills.

Ribs are usually added to improve stiffness, but there are many considerations. Sometimes, an intended reinforcement causes a local stress riser and begins a crack that would not have occurred otherwise. To get a great overview of engineering, from an easy to read book, I strongly recommend "Structures" by J.E. Gordon, or one of his other books.

ribs add stiffness by the use of less added material.

This is easy to see if you make a bridge of 1 sheet of paper - it sags, but if you fold it back and forth with 1 cm pleats it will support more weight than the sheet of paper.

beams and ribs

Ribs on Pillars here.

Ribs on beams or horizontal slabs are well understood as increasing stifness without adding weight.

On Pillars: They are more decorative than anything else. The Only place they might be usefull is on subsequent floors to reduce weight on the lower floors, but then we should be talking about deep ribs and not just decorative ones, like instead of a round pillar, a pillar with a cross section like a CROSS or similar. These are normally very common in high rising buildings made of concrete. Actually, most pilaars in such structures are like that, rarely round.

Well, the ribs we see on various Greek and Roman pillars differ from H, I and T ribbed beams.

ribs are generally , but not alway, used to tie together the two flanges with the web of beam or columns. usually in pairs around holes or areas of high stress areas. it stiffens the area between the ribs and acts like a short beam inside the longer member.

Just look at the lower part of your body (chest, that'll do) and imagine NO RIBS.

Very sloppy affair.

Transfer what you see to what you want to build. Now breath in and maybe get inspired by the living thing.

Or go and look at daisies for a while or anything living for that matter.

Good luck, Ky.
