Bonding Corrugated Roofing to Corrugated Roofing

05/22/2011 4:10 PM

I am in need of a quick temporary fix of gluing (bonding) corrugated roofing to corrugated roofing.

Older roofing is rusted, so a cleaner or prep may be involved?

I want to glue ( NOT nail, weld or screw) small patches of corrugated sheet metal on top of already affixed corrugated.... I just want a TEMPORARY FIX until I can tear open roof and get at the rotted spots of sheeting underneath as well.

Pounding or trying to re-screw may make more leaks than I can handle right now. I just want a quick, temporary fix to cover several spots that were damaged and tore open. the temporary patches will be removed as will all the roofing at a later date.

Does anyone have knowledge of a suitable product?

* segments 28x48" to 28x 72" pieces

**Expected to hold up for approx. 2 months only

*** Heat in the upper 90's or above

**** Humidity 75-85%

suggestions?

Something like this?, it's used a lot in the building industry. When you say temporary, will you be replacing the panels? This adhesive dries to a fairly hard bead which can be difficult to remove.

Pro-Seal has a silicone caulk that seems to be really sticky. I would apply one bead to the underside edge of the patch, and a second bead to the roof inside of where the first bead will land. Press the edges down well to seal the caulk.

Repaired many corrugated iron sheds and roofs in the past. sometimes the rust meant there was no viable material to hold a screw or nail.

My first choice solution for temporary (up to 12 months) was to go to hardware store and buy a can of paint and then hit the rag bag at home for cotton or denim cloth.

Paint the surface with a good rich coating of paint and while still wet apply the cloth and then paint over it. Just like applying fibreglass patches to a boat. The external quality paint will withstand the weater and the cloth provides a form for the paint to span the holes.

Obviously not load bearing, but works really well especially where the surface is already weathered. The only prep was a wire brush to remove heavy scale.

I would just use a mop of liquid tar and embed the patch in it.

I would use products something like this:

<http://www.davco.com.au/images/product/Bitumen%20Paint.pdf>

first and this

<http://www.pscoop.com.au/newweb/msds/Davco/Silvershield.pdf>

over the top.

I have used these products successfully by themselves and with a piece of canvas as temporary repairs to rusted and leaking corrugated roofing.

I expect them to work just as well with a piece of corrugated roofing as the filler.

The Ormandoid will act as both glue and sealer, the silvershield then protects the Ormanoid from the weather, UV etc.

Without the Silvershield the Ormanoid will only last a couple of years where it is exposed to the elements ..... tried that too on some guttering ... I just recently re-did it with the silvershield - where I used both initially it still looks new after a couple of years (I used second hand iron....a 'little' rusty in places ... on my woodshed)

OK...So far all good suggestions. I will weigh in to this tomorrow( actually now, today) and see which I can get my hands on the easiest.

I am so far behind on this termite and old storm damage, its scary. Hurricane season starts next week and I will have to have a new metal roof on by August at the latest.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I like the idea that everybody commented that they had actually did something like this before.

Thank you all again and Bon Soir from the Bayous.......

Speaking from experience in using various products in a very wet area that actually has hurricane force winds for extended periods I would highly recommend the Pro Seal. It works when applied in the wet or in the dry and will hold in the heat where the tar won't. It's holding power is superb. Wipe or brush the surfaces and apply. Don't get it on your hands ; ) Cheap nitrile gloves work best.

Good luck and batten down the hatches.

Just go to the local hardware store and pick up a 5 gallon bucket of cool-seal which is coal tar/kerosene/aluminum powder mix. it is used to seal joints on the roofs of mobile homes. when the kerosene evaporates the aluminum tends to float to the top and is reflective enough to keep the sun from melting the tar.

No adhesive will stick reliably if the surface it is sticking to can flake away. Try using a viscous bitumen based compound and sticking the patch onto the underside of the roof where there should be an un-rusted surface.

What about just tying a tarpaulin over the whole roof, or, sections of it.

As dry as it has been down here on the western gulf coast, it almost makes us wish for a hurricane, or at least a tropical storm or two....

If the roof is in that bad of shape, I'd be reluctant to walk, crawl or lean over it. Better invest in renting a OSHA approved boom man-lift!

Its in decent shape except for one section along the edge where a "professional" carpenter and his helper did me a bum job 4 years ago.

If i needed to rent a lift , it would have been to watch over these so called pro's and there extra sloppy work. Had i not been laid up I'd have seen what they did or did not do with the flashing!

Why Corrugated NEW sheet ?

You should use thinnest possible Non- Corrugated Galvalume Sheet from roll to rest ON Old leaky Corrugated.

Just load the new flat sheet down!

Because it will sit across the top crest and not seal in the trough obviously.
