One Thing About Aluminum Rolling

05/24/2011 10:17 PM

Product shall withstand, without cracking, bending at room temperature through an angle of 180 degrees around a diameter equal to the bend factor shown in Table 3 times the nominal thickness of the product with axis of bend parallel to direction of rolling.

How do you understand the word "through"?

"bending at room temperature through an angle of 180 degrees "

bending at room temperature "to more than" an angle of 180 degrees

180° = full "U" bend (or return bend), as illustrated:

U

There should be no cracking in the outer surface of the "U" part.

I think I agree with what Tornado says.

Yes, through, just passing through, starting at 0 and going through 10,20,30 etc up to 180. There is no hint or implication that it needs to go past 180 although a small margin may be advisable.

If you are trying to achieve a finished product of 180 degree then you will have to go past the amount of springback to end up with 180 degrees. It will depend on the properties of the metal. Caution not all batches of metal are identical in this springback property.

Bending aluminium to have no cracks on the outside of a bend is
(I found) more difficult than it sounds, especially to 180 and over.

Mostly we worked to 2T (T being the thickness of the material) but
that was for steel. I can understand 3T therefore for Aluminium.

There are some "rubber like" plastic materials (forget the name now)
which can be used on a press to support the bend and reduce cracking.
Contact a press brake manufacturer, they will probably know of it.

Over bending (180+) was regular, for acute internal angles.

I took the wife out today, 1 punch.

There are products existing using aluminium which bends, try

Zhengzhou Ocean Packaging Machinery Co., Ltd

They make toothpaste tubes in aluminium which bends in a small radius and doen't crack.
