Process To Do Deburring In A 40ft Length Pipe

06/09/2011 11:02 PM

Hi all,

I need to do deburring in a perforated pipe of 40ft. hole dia is 10mm, wall thickness is 12mm mtl is L80 and nearly 2000+ holes we made over the length of the pipe. for external deburring we use abrasive belt for internal we use die grinder with grinding wheel. but my boss feels like it is not that much ok. can anybody suggest me a good process.

Something like this with balls larger than 10mm? It's called a cylinder hone. One pass rotating CCW and one pass CW.

Why do you have burrs on both ID and OD of the pipe?

I thought the same but how to hold this tool. boz we placed the pipe horizontally also the length of the pipe is abt 40ft, how to do for the whole length??

Why do you have burrs on both ID and OD of the pipe?---the pipe body is perforated by 10mm dia drills abt 96holes/ft for 30ft.

Threaded extension rods, just like drill stem in oil well drilling. I can't imagine burrs on the OD of the pipe.

to deburr on the OD we are using abrasive belts. so that is not an issue. the prob is ID.

96 holes times 10 mm = 960 mm; but a foot is only 304.8 mm. Do the holes actually overlap each other?

nonono, 96holes/fttotally for 30 ft need to do perforation. so totally 96*30=2880holes. hole dia is 10mm

That does not answer Tornado's question.

Each ft 96 holes

each hole dia 10mm

96 holes = 960mm (assuming teh diameters are touching with no ligament)

1 ft = 304.8mm (solid length)

Solid length = 1/3 of air ???

BTW- have you thought about vibratory or electrochemical deburring?

The vibratory- I am not sure due to the extreme length, though it could be configured. But the other one is a distinct possibility (and is actually done in small holes eg some turbine blades etc though I have never seen it done in such large holes.)

In fact 10mm seems to be quite large and hence could be even deburred with a suitable small wheel or deburring knife. The only constraint is the number of holes. And that may be solved by the dissolving (Electrochemical)

But that will depend on the mass of the production - single piece or large quantity.

In mass production (automated machines) even the tools may be designed with flycutters for the purpose.

These are honning stones, can not be used for deburring. These can fine finish the machined surface but can not remove burrs caused by drilling.

You have heard of "pigging" a pipe; how about "porcupining" one?

pigging is not possible here. boz we need to deburr. pigging is normally used for clean the foreign particles in water flow pipes. i couldnt find abt porcupining. is the spelling is correct and wht is the process, may i know??

Hi

Is this in a workshop or field application/environment?

If workshop; do you have access to an electromagnet?

If in the field do you have a hydraulic system in operation?

All very unclear.

If he is the boss he should know. Don't tell him I told you that he is not a Master of his trade. On such a scale he should really know how to avoid such problems and not just leave it with you.

More info please, Ky.

It is not about deburring it is about avoiding the burr in the first place. Well at least I would try not to create them. How? Ask your boss he'll be the guy saving the money. I could think of a few ways to do this but am not in your workshop.

I am too lazy to google how to avoid burrs. Give that a go, it might help.

Good luck, Ky.

How about a deburring tool? Mine is a handle with a swivel knife that automatically follows any contour. It is like a little cantilevered crank made of 2mm steel, with a ball end and an edge ground onto where you might expect a connecting rod.

How about something like this tool: http://www.ezburr.com/products/index.php? Or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ2g4ca3Zho? I have not used either product (and have no connection to these or competing companies), but am aware that they are commercially available and advertised in magazines catering to machine shops and machinists. I'd expect that products not living up to their claims would be driven out of such a market fairly quickly. The designs appear straightforward and mechanically reasonable; I can't see why they should not function as shown.

Why are people assuming that all of the holes are in the same line along the pipe, parallel to the axis? If the holes are in, say, eight rows, the "overlap" problem disappears, with 12 holes per row, per foot of length, and a 15.4mm web between adjacent ones. Or if they spiral around, or are in other patterns, the same holds true.

Re: Process To Do Deburring In A 40ft Length Pipe

If this is a one off most of the answers already given should work, but I favour not creating burrs in the first place. Water jet cutting the holes leaves almost no burr. It is expensive, but given the time you must be spending to remove burrs, it may be cost effective.

If you must drill and have to do this on a production scale, consider hydraulically forcing an abrasive liquid through the holes. The liquid can be made to remove the burrs on both sides of the hole so the external grinding process will be eliminated. For your application you will need a rig with two expanding seals that is inserted into the pipe. The abrasive slurry is injected between the seals and is forced out through the holes. A similar rig with contracting seals to grip the outside of the pipe collects the abrasive and recirculates it through a high pressure pump. Both rigs are repositioned to do the next section of pipe, so a quick method of sealing e.g two sets of plates squeezing O rings mechanically linked and operated with a hydraulic / pneumatic cylinder, is required to make the seals. Typically each one foot section with nominally 50 holes would take 10-15 minutes to abrade. The process is used regularly on small components with internal cross drilling to deburr and polish all the internal surfaces , but I don't know how well it will scale up.

Re: Process To Do Deburring In A 40ft Length Pipe

Usually solid carbide burrs are used for this type of deburring on the inside of the pipe.

A double cut .25 inch shank X .375 inch inverted cone or ball end carbide burr would do a nice job by insertting the burr in the hole and riding the shank against the hole wall. Extended shank burrs are available if the wall thickness is high. The tips of an inverted cone could be ground off by running against a silicone carbide grinding wheel to reduce the diameter slightly for ease of entry in the hole.

If you have a lot of these pipes then using a commercial tumble deburring abrasives by pumping them through the pipe or vibrating the pipe would give fast beautiful results but the intial set up would be expensive because a pump or vibrator would be required and a sleeve or wrap made to cover the holes externally.

If you have a huge number of these pipes having a tumble abrasive company build you a tumble/vibrator out of a larger pipe would be cost effective and do both internal and external deburring at the same time.

How about sand or abrasive blasting? Should be able to use a tubular wand; maybe a little less than 20 ft long.

Yes possible

If you drilling this on VMC then on same Machine instead of Belt you can use Disc Brush and do DeBurring, regarding internal what is the Inside Diameter ?

If possible send Photo of the Burr and product
