Embossed Jacket.

06/14/2011 2:13 AM

How to calculate thiskness of Embossed jacket or Dimpled jacket?

Proof test is the only option?

If yes on which basis the proof test is conducted?

ie How to decide no.of dimples, hole dia of dimples, Thickness of jackets etc.

Jacket design pressure is 8 bar & MOC is SA240 Type304.

Please guide.

What is the use and purpose of the embossed jacket? (Some responders seem to be confused.)

It's cooling jacket on shell of fermenter.

Re: Embossed or Dimpled Jacket thk calculation as per ASME section VIII div 1?

How to calculate Embossed or Dimpled Jacket thk as per ASME section VIII div 1.

Design pressure is 8 bar.

Jacket is plug welded to shell.

If Proof stress in the only option, then

How to decide the jacket plate thickness?

How to calculate no. of holes to be plugged or distance between holes to be plugged, diameter of hole to be plugged.?

Please guide. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response! Sorry, I can't help you. I was hoping that once the question was more clear, someone else might offer some help.

Looking over your question again, I don't understand what you're talking about when you talk about plugging holes. I think somebody would need to know what you're talking about to help you there.

You say the design pressure is 8 bar. Presumably with that, and knowledge of the properties of the material you are using and the dimpling, it should be possible to determine the required thickness of material.

If no one makes any other suggestions here, maybe you'll have to look for a ( structural / civil / mechanical) engineer to help you.

Or start hitting the books. Also, contact the makers of dimpled / embossed plate to get the necessary specifications of the material. Talk to a sales engineer there, tell him what you need to do, and see what advise they can offer.

Hmm, 8 bar would make it a pressure vessel, so that will make things tougher--you will need something like ASME certification. You may be better off finding a fermenter with built in (well, built on) cooling shell, already rated for 8 bar and purchasing that.

What about the manufacturer of your fermenter (or did you make it yourself?)--maybe they sell a cooling jacket.

Or, despite added complication, you may find it cheaper to build a non-pressurized cooling jacket around the fermenter, then get a heat exchanger to use the cooling media at 8 bar to cool something like water to be used in the non-pressurized cooling jacket.

You'd probably need some good engineering help to decide which makes the most sense.

You need to get following parameters finalised from process team

Like - Pitch between dimples, height of jacket, jacket internal pressure, MOC of jacket and vessel etc.

Mechanical design of jacket can be carried out with ASME Section VIII, Div 1, Appendix - 17.

You need to conduct proof test of jacket and based on proof test pressure MAWP can be calculated with Appendix 17.
