I think the most common use is on a rotating part: sometimes a left handed thread is utilized so that the direction of rotation does not tend to loosen but instead tends to tighten the threaded connection.

For example, on bicycle pedals, the pedal on the left side of the bike uses left handed threads so the rotating force of pedaling tends to tighten rather than loosen that connection.

Usally to prevent unlocking related to rotation, or in combination with a right hand thread to adjust length. Anyway unfortunate name to use on an engineer forum. SM.

"Anyway unfortunate name to use on an engineer forum"

Agreed. Either culturally insensitive, arrogant or ignorant.

"Anyway unfortunate name to use on an engineer forum"

In any forum.

Is it possible that the admin may request the member for a change in name?

Though I think it has never been tried, but still this is advisable. As a bonus, the one time change in name that is permitted may be still retained (ie this member may be given one extra chance)

This is obviously off topic (the answer is already provided in #2) but still I am putting it on topic.

Hope this isn't his name. Lady luck can be a bitch! S.M.

Yours is to the only comment not posted AP, so I will respond to you.

I agree, the username is culturally insensitive, arrogant or ignorant.

I am sort of surprised the apparent collection of Molotov Cocktails avatar used by this guy has stood the test of time.

Ouch, I've managed to miss that one.

I admit that I can be culturally insensitive, but it is mostly out of ignorance and not intentional. Once I find that I have offended some one, I modify my actions. (This excludes the flaming as$holes who post anonymously and add no value. I like to offend them)

The turnbuckle used to tighten-up fence wires, railway coach underframe trussing and adjust railway junction drive rod lengths has one right-turn and one left-turn thread.

FueL gas bottles have Left-turn threads
