About Profile Data

07/19/2011 3:56 AM

If one looks at a member's profile, it displays the ten most recent posts for which the member received two votes for a Good Answer. Can this feature be expanded to show also the ten most recent posts that were voted Off Topic?

What would the benefit of this be? Do you think it might increase the use of OT voting if a "mark of shame" was displayed in others' profiles?

You may be right about that. I would hope not, but human nature is what it is.

Additionally, some members seem to mark every one of their own comments OT, even if it is a substantial contribution to the thread.

I was just curious as to which of my posts has attracted some OT after GA votes lately.

Thought as much.

It's the Yo-yo Approved Popular Persons Sorority (YAPPS)

Yes, of course, it is confusing, as they do not declare their negative voting.

But, to be fair; sorority membership prohibits possession of appurtenances.

I don't see any benefit in that. The GAs are misleading anyway, some of my best answers have been moved off the front page so quickly that not enough people read them to award GAs.

In any case, there appear to be a couple of cliques here who award a GA for a friend's amusing OT, rendering the system useless.

"some of my best answers ". There's the rub. You don't get to decide what your best answers are.

Your comment about cliques sounds like sour grapes to me.

They are called lone wolves. A nearly extinct species.

If there is enough left over they live well.

How about you give me a good answer and I give you one back. We would only need one more sucker who gets the drift and there's your clique plus profile data. Gosh I am so clever .

I would agree with your second comment about GA and OT if you disagree with some opinions you are "awarded" OTs just for giggles i think

I believe that the OT feature is not a reliable indication of a post's validity. I see many OT's that I think are not justified. (Not that my opinion matters)

I was going to whack you one, but I didn't.

Not certain, but I think I have the record OT count for one post... 11,102,010 OT count. Here it is. You guys feel free to bump that up, if you want.

I think that may be a glitch because it also happens to be the date of your post. It was rated OT by a moderator because it was related to a deleted spam comment.

Yeah, I explained in the thread that merph and I had visited about the spam, and I invited him to have some fun with my OT. It's all good. As I said in the thread, I think it's funny. Merph seems to have a sense of humor, and I enjoy that. This forum is (I believe, anyway) supposed to be a little bit of fun. I try to keep it light.

[edit] I hadn't noticed; it IS the date! Even better!

Re: About Profile Data

Ya know, we have had three or four threads about our 'cliques' in the last few days.

Every member on this thread so far has gotten at least one GA vote from me. Every one of them was well within the spirit of an earned GA vote. Nobody gives me GA votes if I don't offer up a good answer. I get a few GA's with the occasional pun, but these (usually) are at least an accurate response to the original post.

Just how do I get invited into one of these cliques? I am among 41 CR4 members with 2,800 posts or more. You would think, by now, I could stumble into one.

Keep and eye on Kramarat's GA count and you can see one in action. These would be the "Anti-Anger Avengers" or maybe Kramarat Karma Kryptonites.

I certainly wouldn't want to be associated with any clique that would consider having me!!

(That's a take off on Mark Twain or W. C. Fields, can't remember which. Don't wanna be accused of plagiarism. )

Groucho Marx said it. "I wouldn't belong to any club that would have me as a member".

Or something like that.

Seriously, cliques? I think not.

The original quote about being associated with a club that would consider having one as a member goes back at least to Oscar Wilde, and there is a good chance he was just repeating something he heard from someone else. It has also been attributed to Groucho Marx, among others...
