Mississipi Oil Barge Dimensions

07/22/2011 8:55 AM

Dear all,

I`ve been approached by a shipowner which intends to build barges to navigate along some amazon rivers. However, he has on his mind that the barges must be Mississipi standard. Before go ahead, I need to compare their dimensions and check if it is possible to arrange a convoy which can navigate on shallow waters and can easily turn the river curves. However, I have no idea of the barges dimensions. Can someone help me on that?

Best regards

JMSR,

Welcome to CR4!

You may want to look at CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 207 - Navigation Regulations

You are correct except the OP was looking for "Mississippi Standard"

Tried Google and could not find "Mississirazilian Standards"

Yes, I was looking for that. I had no idea of the dimensions and I should check if this standard could fit on brazilian shallow waters. Thanks for all info and links you sent.

Nine feet maximum draft, as I recall; but even then you might still run aground occasionally, because the silt/sand moves.

"Mark Twain" gives three feet of spare wiggle-room.

Here is the type of cargo vessels used the Amazonas Basin (Brazil, Ecuador Peru, Bolivia).

The paper is in spanish, but images are clear enough to be easily understood. Images of barges / tugs are also available.

Pretty good.

This is one of the ways I can inform owner that he is looking for something that maybe it will not be usefull in Brazil. Thanks for these guidelines.

Better check with the River Control on the Amazon too. I have been planning of retireing to Uruguay and reading alot. They are so many Corporations mining gold and other minerials along the river that accidents and traffic are a real problem.

They are putting in controls the limit sizes of ships, barges and container ships. So don't get caught with your Contracts Down, lol .
