Video Card Problem

08/31/2011 12:18 AM

Hi,

I am having problem with my PC.

I am using 256mb (AGP) ATI9550 video card with my P4VT8+ motherboard.

When I tried to play testing 3D ( dxdiag-display-direct 3D acceleration ) or play games there is always notification that my video card stop responding and my computer stops functioning.

I tried to use different drivers from radeon but still failed to run.

My monitor is a DVI input.

Can anyone help me to solve my problem?

Is the video card fan working? It could have gotten enough dust to bind the blade. Have you checked inside the case?

Perhaps your power supply is too small. Some high performance video cards are very power hungry. Sounds like when it tried to kick into 3D it demanded more power than you had. That could cause your computer to stop functioning until you rebooted.

Are you going to come back and let us know what's going on? Did anything we mentioned help?

Or are you one of those thread-starters that accepts a good solution and doesn't come back and let the people giving free help know that their advice worked or didn't?

We would just like to know.

The power supply should be labeled with a power rating. Something like 450W. What is it?

Is that the power supply that came with your PC, or did you assemble your own PC?

The reason I say this is that I have had some bad luck buying PC power supplies when purchased separately. If you bought this power supply separately, it may be that it is the problem.

That video card might have gone bad....I recently experienced simular Intermittant problems that always traced back to a "driver" problem. Ininstalled drivers, reinstalled new ones...no change. Out of frustration I bought a newer faster video card with more memory (because the price was right) and low and behold, no problems since.

If you just bought the card and still have your receit, trade it in for another, might just have got a bad one. It Happens.

I have had all sorts of problems with newer MBs not having the correct drivers to function. Biggest problem is the Microsoft monopoly and the constant change of the OS for the newer systems. As stated before, if your PS is not up to handling the Vid card, you are going to have persistant problems. I also found that 90% of most problems comes from lack of cooling capacity on the video cpu. I have a high end ATI card as well, my fix was adding a larger heat sink and then placing a PCI cooling fan in the first slot next to the agp slot. I also manufactured a ducting system to give maximum effects from the cooling fan. It draws air accross and out of the box. Works and keeps the system functioning great.

Good luck

Maximo

Have you installed the latest DirectX from Micorsoft? You may have a conflict with old video drivers as well. If you have an extra hard drive you could always try a clean install of windows with the latest video drivers and DirectX to see if it's a hardware or software problem. Finally, is the operating system you're using fully compatable with your hardware?

You Power supply should be more than adequate for that one card, I have a 525W PS running a ATI 6950 GPU. The problem is likely either a bad card or driver issue. AGP cards are legacy cards, most companies do not make current drivers for them anymore. What version of Windows are you using?

Re: Video Card Problem

My video card problems are all caused by heat, especially playing games. I recently had to replace the heat sink and fan on my card and had an additional fan installed above the vid card. So far so good. But remember every additional fan you install will draw power. Make sure your power supply is big enough to run all the devices you have inside the box.

Another problem occured when I updated to windows 7 was the sleep settings on the control panel. When windows would go into sleep mode the video card would refuse to wake up again and I would have to reboot. I disabled the sleep mode.

You might need to download the latest bios drivers for your motherboard. I have had to update the BIOS before, just be sure to do it in the evenings when there is less likely to be electrical interruptions.

Sometimes graphics cards cause interrupt clashes which may lead to this kind of malfunction. You need to check this out. Do a google search on 'Interrupt Clash' and you will find links like http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/change-irq-settings.htm. You need to play around a bit (very carefully!) and hope for the best.
