Source of Carbon Brushes for 12 Volt Auto Motors

09/05/2011 7:15 PM

Can you recommend a source of carbon brushes for fractional hp, 12 volt automotive motors e.g. for windhsield wiper or fan? The brushes I have adapted that were designed for hand tools, 115 volts, have such high resistance 3-4.5 ohms they will not work on the low voltage motors. Replacement brushes are not available from auto dealers; they only sell the whole motor @ a very high price.

Well typically when the brushes are that worn out the commutator and bushings or bearings if you are lucky are also pretty well worn out too.

Point is if you are that cheap go to the scrap yard and buy up a bunch of used motors from wrecked vehicles for parts. Odds are you wont be out more than a few dollars at most for the whole lot.

On Hondas and Toyotas the sintered bronze bushings become dry but are not seriously worn when the brushes wear out. The communtator can be tuned on a lathe to a new surface. So new brushes and a minor machining job plus sewing machine oil can restore the motor to near new condition.

The popular things that are rebuilt on cars are the starters and alternators, and the generators before them. NAPA till carries a load of brushes for these things. Get a hold of an NAPA electrical buyers guide, and happy hunting.

Intrupa - SMH(Systems Material Handling)

The have a large assortment of bushes that will fit most applications. Though they mainly deal with motors used in electromotive applications. You will have to match it up by dimensions and the leads.

I second your frustration. The blower motor on my girlfriend's van (2008 Dodge Caravan) went out, due to water damage. The only place to get a new one is the dealer for around $300!!! I ended up sacrificing one of my old jigsaws to get the brushes.

I didnt know about the NAPA thing though. I will be checking that out in the future.

Thanks Bob :)

When I've needed various brushes in the past, I would go to a local "electrical rebuilder" for automotive electrical systems. These guys rebuild alternators, starters, etc. Most med-large metro areas usually have at least one of these left. With the proliferation of "big box" auto parts stores, the automotive electrical shops are dwindling, but we still have a couple here where I live. See if you have a "Automotive, Electrical" section in your "Yellow Pages".

Happy hunting!

Good idea, but don't wait too long. The independent specialty rebuild shops are dwindling.
