Bonding Kevlar Material to Aluminum

09/16/2011 3:52 AM

Could anyone suggest me the most efficient adhesive?

A sealant could also work; or a filler material..

Just depends on the specifics, and how much bond strength you need. Silicones, epoxies and even pressure sensitive films will work, with proper surface preparation.

I'd contact Du Pont and talk to a technical person about my specific application.

I need the one which will bond most efficiently with kevlar. RTV silicones are generally used as sealants I think, for high temperature applications. Two part or one part epoxies are so as well; epoxy is the one I cant use for somehow I remember I used epoxy adhesives for very basic applications.

Double-sided adhesive tape might work too.

This will form an additional layer between the kevlar and the aluminum material.

I want to stick kevlar material to an aluminum hull of a vehicle for protection.

I usually consolidate Aramid cloth with Epoxy, which also makes a good bond to Al, but the surface needs to be primed properly, or the bond will eventually fail. I expect that any high-strength adhesive would need surface pre-treatment. If your Aramid is pre-laminated, you need to check compatibility with the resin used.

You can also use polyester resin available from auto parts store or boat repair suppliers which should be readily accessible and fairly inexpensive. As stated above the aluminum plate should be preped with a chemical etchant or with a degreaser and light sanding prior to applying the Kevlar.

Polyester resin is brittle when cured

do they use it in the Automotive industry?

Contact manufacturer such as Master Bond, and get their suggestions. Google Adhesives and or epoxy adhesives and make contact.. No one knows their product better and yes you will need a good prep both mechanical and chemical.

Wettability of polymers ( like kevlar ) is poor for most of the adhesives. Plasma treatment improves it considerably. It would be a good idea to expose it to either a low pressure plasma or an atmospheric plasma before using any adhesive.

Try Loctite marine! This adhesive supports underwater bonding you can find it at Lowe's in about six dollars, it bonds in 48 hours this causes no hi temp in the epoxy chemical reaction. Be sure to desgrease surfaces.

There are about 100 adhesives that would work. Best to contact Lord, Loctite, Dupont, etc about your specific requirements. Is the Kevlar in an epoxy matrix? If so, what type. How important is flexibility or bond integrity under high temps. Chemical exposures? Desired cure time? Production product or one off? etc etc.

If is is just fabric, and you want to stick it to aluminum "pretty well" then a spray-on contact cement would be simple. Polyurethane adhesives (like Gorilla Glue) work well with mixed materials. But there are no quick answers that work for every application.

Kevlar is bidirectional woven kevlar.

Desired cure time isnt a matter of fact but bond integrity and chemical exposure have high importance.

It also depends if you are talking about a surface bond or an embedded fixture, if the aluminum is an inclusion a very good bond can be made with epoxy acrylic resin in a vacuum bag method. A filler material can be whipped up using polyester resin as the boning agent and any filler like saw dust or micro bubbles or chopped fabric, mix to the consistency of creamy peanut butter or pancake batter, this is basically what bondo is.

Define your need better and we can provide a better answer, if you are talking about surface or lapped seam then the aircraft industry uses these types of bonds.

Talking about a surface bond, to be used on the hull of a defense vehicle; for ballistic protection.

Aircraft industry uses silicone type in many applications because of the high T bearing need.

what about polysulfide? Does anyone have idea about polysulfide type adhesive to be used in this application?
