If none of those have worked, try superfine grade steel wool, number 0000, with a small amount of dish soap such as Dawn detergent in the water. Rinse with hot water before and afterward.

If the road grime includes oil or grease, a petroleum solvent could be first, followed by detergent/water, with a final clear water rinse.

But keep the wiper blades away from the petroleum solvent. My ex late father-in-law thought he was doing me a favour cleaning mine with paraffin, and it did for the rubber.

It's quite possible that your windshield is pitted, in which case cleaning won't help.

Have you looked into a glass polish?

I just used lacquer thinner on my rear window to get off some stuff, and it worked like a beauty, and didn't damage anything... just take care not to get any on anything but the glass.

Yah, all that rubber around my window was real dirty. Using the thinner helped to remove all of the black from it...

There is also a product called Glass Wax which has a fine pumice polishing grit. It makes a pretty good polish but like someone else stated...if the windshield is pitted then you may as well get a new one.

Wet with soapy water then use a single edge razor blade at a low angle and lightly shave off the grime. That will strip the surface bare. If you have pits try a foamy bathroom cleaner. That will dissolve any calcium based component of the grime and may loosen the rest.

Dura Gloss makes a product called Nu-Glass. It is used by hand, or polisher. I have used it to polish windshields that have water stains and other crap on them. It works well, and leaves a smooth, clean and clear windshield. If you use a polisher, keep it moving. There is a lot of heat generated by the the friction.

Permatex also makes a similar product called No touch, But I have not used it yet.

try alchohol first. if that does'nt work, try lacquer thinner. do NOT get it on the paint.

if you have scratches from thr wiper blades, it wil need polishing.

After washing the glass shield:

Use tooth paste-and rub it on the glass stains with cotton wool !! It is a lot of work

-but it will improve the vision (removes scratches from watch glass too)

Hope it will help

all good suggestions to clean.. but once you've cleaned it.. you then have to keep to clean.

Cut a potato in half (bigger the better) and wipe cut side down all over the glass, that will help keep the dirt from bedding into the glass and make your glass easier to clean.

Once it's clean, seal it with a good car polish, you will find that rainwater pearls off above around 30MPH, so do not use the wipers except when you have to, then the polish will last longer....

Here you need to clean/polish the screen about 3 times a year....The polish makes cleaning easier....

I used to work at a Ford dealership and to clean windshields on used cars, we would use bon ami power cleanser. It would clean anything off.

An old friend recommended Bon Ami to me also. Use Bon Ami only though. Other similar cleaning products are too coarse.

As Bwire had suggested soap solution should be workable. I think he had mentioned the sodium stearate or laurate structure.

One more simple solution is the application of hair shampoo lotion[diluted with water] allow some time to wet out & rinse.

For road oil (like tar), I have used lighter fluid in the past and it worked like a champ.

If all that suggested dont work, then remove the windshield, buy dozen of the product in the right picture and ride swiftly. Replace when get blur like the picture in center.------------------------ ---------------

If you like more speed, then try the second product given in picture on left.

Have fun !

NEVR-DULL works really well. Years ago a consumer magazine did a little comparison between store products and home remedies. They found NEVR-DULL worked the best to clean windshields. I have used and it does work.

GoJo

http://www.gojo.com/united-states/brands/gojo/product.aspx?sdid={26B8FACF-A339-4C09-82E0-EDD7736E10B3}

works amazingly well on chrome or glass

the citrus oil cuts through the hardwater & other stains. The pumice fine enough not to scratch
