Hydraulic actuator

04/22/2007 4:57 PM

Hi,

I am designing a testing machine, and need an actuator to apply a force to a matrial repeatedly. I cannot work out how to get an actuator to apply differing magnitudes of force and varying frequencies. I cannot even work out what sort of actuator to use, although I'm thinking servohydraulic maybe the best way. I'm pulling my hair out so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

John.

A hydraulic moulding machine (press) has the hydraulic system to do exactly what you require.

Do what any savvy designer would do, call up some actuator companies on Monday, have them send over their technical reps and, in the comfort of your own workplace, pick their brains. It's called, "that which I don't know, I know how to find out".

You can build something yourselves. (I am a DIY fan)

A computer can provide outputs to control solenoid valves etc.

Any requirements can be achieved with a small program.

I did something similar.

2 control wires from a RS232 were used to achieve up and down.

The 4 input ports and the joystick input port of a games port was used to provide inputs. (limit switches etc)

(a game port is not that reliable but did complete the test with ease)

Hi Before getting too deep into problems yourself, why not consider a ready made solution. My company manufactures commercial hydraulic and servo electric actuators with all the hardware and application software you need for materials and components testing. If you send me your specification, I'll get someone to show you how we can help you - with no obligation of course.

Also take care that if you really want to build something yourself you will need to take care of all aspects of safety.

There is a cost - but its probably much cheaper and more effective and safer in the long term.

Contact Tescom. They can review your needs, engineer a system to operate and record data from your testing.
