CSCC Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking

09/29/2011 10:01 AM

Dear All Pro,
I would like to install valve in high chloride process condition.
From my research, Carbon Steel, Alloy is the best one.
What the others perfect materials to avoid the CSCC.
Regards

Have you checked here?

For both HCl and NaCl, carbon steel shows severe effect. What form is the chloride in and what is the concentration?

This is for oil and gas installation. Chloride in the liquid form mix together with others hydrocarbon.

Concentration it too details. I just need the information which materials suitable.

Appreciate if you can advice a link or a materials table for my reference.

Most alloys that are suitable for sour service (H2S) are also suitable for chloride service as well. take a look at NACE MR 0175.

What temperature - CCSC - carbon corrosion stress cracking becomes a big problem at elevated temps

It's such a pity that plastics cannot be used. No problem with plastics!

depends on the pressure and temperature, but some plastics ARE allowed, but I would not say that plastics have NO problems, some of them DO have problems with chlorides.

which ones have a problem? all have to be tested in the specific environment because every manufacturer's product is different but some nylons, PVC's, and styrenes (ABS) have problems with chlorides after long exposure. Most of the "engineering" plastics are compatible, (PTFE's, PVDF's, PEEK, PPS, some UHMW's, etc.) but there are issues with temperature and pressure you have to take into account, all of these will cold flow under temp and pressure.

When I worked in the iron ore processing plants our problem was extended periods at a 600° C heat soak - out of the range of plastics that I have worked with.
