Projecting On Waterfall

09/30/2011 4:21 PM

Hi you knowledgeable people

The other day I sent some birthday wishes to a Member and had come up with the idea to project an image (in this case a 50) onto a waterfall. Something like this:

Now I really want to do it and have found out that it is about 50m from dry land and a power socket. I had thought of using a boat but then I will need a battery as well and someone to handle the projection. Two actually, because someone will have to steady the boat.

Now my Questions:

What kind of projector could cover such a distance?

If not, how close to the waterfall would one have to go?

Could a laser projector do the job?

This is not a Spielberg set but has to be manged at low cost and at a remote location. I can't take anything in the car because it is a surprise and Heidi would ask questions about me fitting film lighting equipment for an over night stay.

She does not even know we are going there and doesn't know that our kids and grand kids will be there as well. My son and I would be able to sneak out of celebrations for a while and could set up the 60 (transparency) and the "projector".

I have 21 days to google something but thought I'd ask here first. I have been in touch with the management and they thought it might be a good idea for the future, so they are looking into it as well. They are in on the surprise. BTW, this is the place were it is supposed to happen:

http://www.paronellapark.com.au/

Maybe we should all meet there one day and repair the hydro electric power plant, if we would ever get to it and not be sitting around basking in the knowledge that the circle can't be squared.

Any ideas?

Love this place, Ky.

PS: I am not advertising for the place but will, once I have some photos from the trip.

Okay ky here goes. Totally different than what you're thinking, but it might just work.

Is there any way you could get out there and mount a small waterproof spotlight behind the waterfall?

What I'm thinking of is using a smaller dc light, mounting it behind the waterfall, using a cardboard cutout of whatever the number is on the lens and projecting it from behind the falls.

Originally I was thinking maybe a remote controlled light, but I think it might be easier to simply wire in a battery operated timer to turn the light on at the appropriate time.

It would be awesome if you could pull it off. Everybody innocently sitting around the party....................all of a sudden out of the blue, the waterfall lights up!

Thanks

I have not been on sight and Meagan, the lovely lady on the phone, could only guess that it was about 50m from dry land. I tried working it out on the videos, which are offered on the site, but could not make a cavity behind the falls out.

You are right, it would be a simple solution just have to change the 60 around so it doesn't read 06 from where we would be having a great time.

See if I can find out over the phone.

I'm not Dunn yet , Ky.

Another thing that may work, given the range you're talking about, is possibly configuring some laser pointers in a box in the shape of 60, mounting them in a tree, if you can get the right angle, and wiring them up with either a timer or to be turned on by remote control.

Something like this might be able to be done with a laptop. Probably won't last long though.

Or one of these using the cardboard cutout.

Call your local theatre and ask to speak with the Lighting Designer.

Kymaster,

After a good think about this one, I've got a couple of suggestions.

1) Use your car headlights as the projector, and use a fresnel lense (large or small) to make the light parallel, and then make a cardboard mask with your 50 cut out... with a small frame. (there are several optical solutions.. but fresnel is probably easiest, unless you know an amateur lens grinder who will lend you the correct lens)

If you can come up with one of those 8" fresnel lenses, just duct tape it over your headlight (while blocking the other completely) and then place your 50 frame at 10 feet, and project across the 50 feet of water onto the waterfall. (if permissible.) You can also get a large high quality fresnel lens from an old rear projection tv, if you can find one being disposed of)

2) Talk the park people into purchasing the necessary projection equipment, while you offer your services as project designer and installer.

3) Perhaps you can set up a projector in a convenient spot, and use a mirror, or mylar membrane mirror (suspended with fishing line) at the correct location over the water, to reflect your image onto the falls (if you can't get behind the falls)

4) If you can position your projector behind the falls, you will probably have to waterproof the whole system somehow, including electrical... so that may be problematic.

5) You can always place a pole in the middle of the pond.. with the equipment mounted on it. (with solar charger and a battery, as power supply is again a problem in the wet.)

6) you can get 50 tealight candles, place them in 50 glasses or jars, and get someone else to light them all before you show up with Heidi...

7) if you do get your projector working...imagine how cool it would be to make the waterfall flow up, with a reverse video.

cheers,

Chris

That is what I am doing now. They like the idea and might want to look into it for weddings birthdays and whatever looks nice on falling water. They would have it ready for any occasion with a simple switch.

It is 60 BTW, the young Heidschnucke would like it to be 50 but coming to think of it I could always include a typo. When we meet one day we'll go there and have a day off. It is truly a jungle setting with some pleasant accommodation and a not working Hydro electric plant.

I'll let you know how I go, Ky.

I am guessing that you have never seen the laser light shows they do/did at Niagra Falls?

Re: Projecting On Waterfall

No Pete I haven't.

Must be something to behold. In this case it seems more manageable though. The thing is that my wife does not know a thing about the trip nor the lights. What she does know is how a rat smells and if she sees me playing with lasers and finds me projecting numbers on a garden sprinkler at night and the like, she will call the guys with the white jackets.

17 days to go and I'll have a switch to turn on whatever we have come up with. If this would not be an Island (We have to ferry to Australia) I would just drive there and have a look at the situation and talk to the manager or technician. They have not called me back and I think they might see it as a crazy idea and don't want to tell me.

And on the day, when all is working, they'll say "Ah that was simple, why didn't I think of that? We told you it would work!" Like evanmjones said the theater people would be my safest bet. Yeah, if I would like the whole town to know before we even get there, he is right. It is really "out in the sticks" and if the sounds of birds change one can feel something is wrong.

Nothing is too special when it comes to me better half. Yep, a 6carat ring is out of the question, we are over that. Nowadays it's a twinkle in an eye that gets one exited

I'm on the case, Ky.

In the old days you would use a "follow spot" courtesy of the local theatrical house. Or an arc projector (200kg) Both using metal 'slides'.

These days you hire a 'laser light' from someone like this

(All above assume this is at night - if so, all will do the distance)

Thanks Mate

Just spoke to the technician there. Can't be done because the waterfall and bridge are lit by night and they can't turn it of because the local council wants it on all of the time for workplace health and safety reasons.

At least I tried.

They have a "Love Tunnel" there and I'll use a video camera projector inside there and project something nicer than age. Not as large but nicer. My son said he'll take it from here.

Knocking off on full pay, that's what I'll do.
