Fresh Water Mist for IC Generators in Dry Environments

10/14/2011 4:49 PM

Hello CR4res!!

I have heard that use of fresh water mist applied at air inlet of internal combustion engine used for generators in dry environments help improve engine efficiency. how much more improvement can be obtained if any? What is level of relative humidty is consired dry envirenment? and how to use this to determine how "misty" should the mist be to improve efficiency.

Any references welcome.

Not at the air inlet, on the radiators. Keeps them cool in the desert and even offshore. I'm sure "somewhere" there is somebody doing it into the intake but not that I've seen and check all the previous CR4 about water into intake manifolds, a little better idea than H2 but not done by non-squirrels as far as the real world goes.

OK Charlie, while they go discuss water injection; you come over here and gimme a hand please - I didn't think evaporative effects worked on things like steel? I know it works on skin, but...

Sure, works fine on steel.

Humph, the pain of filing new information - thanks.

Pain is when weakness leaves the body. I am happy enough when the cramps lesson for a short while.

Hopefully pain is ignorance leaving the brain, although I been told age can be told by the pain experienced on encountering a new idea

Had to go out, just back. It's wind-chill that does't work on steel.

Anyone think/see someone doing water directly in an intake?

I'm not sure of your age, but I'd venture to say, Water injection been around a little longer than you.

I do know that water injection with the use of a turbo or super charger has been done. But the water injection is more to cool the combustion chamber to prevent fuel detonation than it is to try and gain any mechanical efficiency from producing steam. I suppose that a mist might provide some benefit. I wonder if the added water vapour would more quickly pit or damage the valve seats or the exhaust. You might even have an icing problem in the intake manifold from the pressure drop causing a temperature drop, too.

I don't know how much research you've done yourself, but this link is a pretty good starting point. Just be sure to read thru all of it. There's some variables to contend with when talking about water injection.
