The Best Material for Catch Fluorine Gases

10/19/2011 10:09 PM

Can you tell me which are your recommendation for material construction of a scrubber in a phosphate fertilizer plant?

The atmosphere are Sif4+ HF (Gases) and H2SiF6 (liquid) at 25% and 65-70 °C.

Thanks in advance

Try caustic soda.

Tanks for your answer MPWslack, but i was asking is for the material of construction of scrubber. What are the plastics or linners best to use in the equipment. The water liquor is working.

You should use plastics that are already rich in fluorine. These are resistant to attack for fluorine and it's compounds. Examples are:

polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE, "Teflon")

polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF, "Kynar")

We used thin films of PVDF to prevent attack by HF gas. It works. Good luck!

PVDF is available as Brushable Paint too. Metal Roof Sheets are painted-oven dried.

Just Brush on to your walls. Again and Again.

Best of luck.

You could get a PFA coating. Very fast and not too expensive either.

PVDF, FEP, and PFA are also available with a fabric type backing so fiberglass can be used to strengthen it. Essentially you end up with a fiberglass scrubber with a 2-3mm lining. It can also be cemented to metal. No worry about pinholes in a coating and it can be easily repaired or modified if needed years later. Seams are thermally welded and spark tested during construction. One item I would caution about is that concentrations left in duct from condensate evaporation generally are much higher than the source concentrations, therefor the necessity of using a material that shows no degradation at high concentrations. Here is a link to a couple of chemical resistance charts I have found very reliable as they are based on actual testing.

Polypropylene, polyethylene or PTFE will all do well for this application.
