Changes in Pipe Sizing in the Main Header - Chiller

For a flow of 6,000 GPM is it recommended that I change in the header size ?

12" and 20" the header size will be.

the reason is capital cost saving

Rule of thumb for liquids:

If the average velocity is below 1m/s then the pipe is too large.

If it is above 3m/s then the pipe is too small.

Capital cost savings is a sales pitch by pipe salesmen : You need to compare your capital cost saving against the increase in running cost over the lifetime of the pipe.
