Symbol 1: A cell has two ends, labelled + (positive) and - (negative).
Symbol 2:A cell pushes the electric current from the positive terminal round to the negative one. This is the way that conventional current flows.

Two or more cells can be connected end-to-end to make a battery. A typical cell has a voltage of 1.5 volts (we write this as 1.5 V). By connecting cells in series, we can makes batteries with 3 V, 6 V and so on.

The symbol-1 depicts a battery with two cells connected in series and thus is more specific. The symbol-2 depicts a battery in more general terms - having more than one cell, connected either in series or parallel.

Never seen #1. Always seen and used #2. Never noticed an accurate correlation between the number of repeats on the drawing and the voltage, needed a note to be precise. -- JHF

I would assume that 1 is two independent cells while 2 is a single battery of two or more cells.
