Suggestion required for MOTOR cable.

12/26/2011 12:10 AM

We are going to install 150HP VFD and 125HP MOTOR.

Plz suggest the cable and its current capacity for each conductor and type of cable. Distance from VFD to MOTOR is nearly 8-10Meter.

Regards,

Abhijeet

What voltage? or, better yet, what amperage on the motor nameplate?

In the U.S. NEC (National Electrical Code), motor conductors are initially sized for an "ampacity" of 1.25 x standard motor FLC, which is obtained from tables in the Code. Then some corrections may be needed for such things as ambient temperature, number of adjacent conductors, and voltage drop if the distance is long. Overload protection is set according to the motor nameplate current, which may vary sightly from the standard current mentioned before.

This is just a summary of the main items. Your local Codes and practices may be somewhat different. You need to follow them.

Interesting to know NEC protection standards. Australian Standard/New Zealand Standard 3000:2007;

Selecting Circuit Breakers, 1.45 x standard motor FLC

Selecting Fuses, 1.6 x standard motor FLC.

Can one get British Standard 7671 on eBay? It is available on Amazon... (usual disclaimer, both)

1. What is your supply voltage/motor voltage?

2. Estimations:

Assume V=415V, Motor In=161.10, Motor Is=225.50,Motor P.F=0.8, Motor Efficiency=0.9, Motor kW=92.6, VFD HP=150HP=110.32kW, VFD Amps approx=191.84, VFD approx short circuit Amps=287.76A.

A. From AS/NZ 3008.1.1. Cable is selected as per motor Is of 225.50 Amps, so that cable can withstand motor short circuit current, and VFD short circuit current, as VFD is 110.32kw (150HP), approximate Amps of 191.84, approximate short circuit current of 287.76.

Cable size in mm2 : 95 mm2, 3 core 90°C LV or 4 core 90°C LV.

Current rating: 285 A

Three phase voltage drop @ 90°C: 0.450 mV/A.m

B. American Wire Gauge (AWG)

Cable size in AWG: 400MCM, 3 core/4 core LV

Current rating: 225A/280A

Three phase voltage drop @ 90°C, coper conductor set, 32.808 feet long (10m), 415V, no conduit: 0.2% of 415V.

what is the distance between VFD and motor .This is crucial apart from questions on the post .
