Glue Sensing Device/Sensor

01/24/2012 12:35 AM

Dear Friends;

We have four Flexo Graphics Printing Machines which converts corrugated sheets into printed boxes. We use liquid glue for joining the flap of box. Some time it happen that some boxes pass without glue and due to high speed, operator does not judge them. We want to install a device/sensor which can detect the unglued boxes. Does anyone know about such device/sensor?

Maybe a barcode reader could be adapted to this? (Just an idea for detecting stripes.)

Hi,

This should be easy, as your box is brown and your glue is while, simple colour sensor with small PLC to count the strips will solve the problem.

In Malaysia we have Keyence (www.keyence.com). They for sure have solution, but expensive

You also can look for Autonics. they also have sensors, heck all automation supply company should have a light/colour sensor which can detect this. Light sensor can be used too, since the glue is white you get most reflection and the box will not, comparing this can give count.

P.S - we existed automation business in 2005, but I am still rather active in it, unable to solve your problem, only able to help and guide.

A jet of air might be enough to blow the un-glued box off the line while leaving the glued ones on it.

If the bead of glue has height. A sensor to measure the change in surface height.

Speed is the potential problem here. Getting a sensor that will determine if a box has glue is just the first part where speed can make things difficult. Once a box has been identified as having insufficient glue, you will have to find a way to sort the rejected box out of the production line.

It's done all the time, the standard for the industry is to make sure your glue has a fluorescent pigment in it (90% of them do for this very reason) and use a Luminescence Sensor in the production line. The sensor will have a UV light source built-in and will shine on the area, then respond to the luminescence of the fluorescing material in the glue. No luminance, no glue, reject. You can easily test your glue with any UV light source (for example a "black light") and if it glows, it's good.

I think it is possible by using laser sensors check for http://www.timetechusa.net/Laser%20Sensor.htm this type of sensor may be suitable

Another possibility is capacitive sensors. They have been used for this exact application and do not require any changes in the chemistry of the glue.

Here is a barcode reader .

It is built entirely in Visual C#, and it supports Microsoft .NET 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and above versions. This control is very easy to install into your .NET, ASP.NET, Visual C# and VB.NET applications.

Hope it helps!
